Whippet breeding, will a racer make a good worker

Recommended Posts

Have been offered a pup from 2 good racing whippets. The owner of the bitch bought her to show and race, but excelled at racing. The dog is a good quality racer and wondered if a pup would make a good worker? Have never owned a long dog. I know my way around gun dogs and there breeding but not whippets and work quality.

Cheers james

Your dogs are in super condition mate, the work you put into your dogs is there to see.

Thankyou mate, It's taken me 10 years to get the dogs i've got today and alot of thought and research has gone into there breeding etc. I've made the odd mistake along the way but i'm proud of what i

A photo of my bitch vixen, Look at the depth of her chest, she'll work all day with the ferrets and go lamping the same night without any problems.

That bitch Vixen is a stunning looking whippet. As for the original question, my late father and our relations have raced bwra whippets for many years and if my father kept a pup back to race and it did not make open class he often found them a working home with people ratching rabbits and they were often very good but a little injury prone, i have hunted rabbits since childhood but i would sooner have a small lurcher with a little bedlington or collie in it but just my personal opinion.

Chartpolski it's ped mate. I'm new to whippets. Surely you can build stamina as it gets fitter. How gamey are whippets?

Cheers james

James pesonally i believe stamina is in the breeding, i've a friend with a race bred ped whippet and it can;t live with vixen or sagar, after 2 hours ferreting it just goes and sits on my jacket as it's had enough mate. where my whippets will work all day.

mally those animals of thyne are a credit to you fella , but like the cumbrian fella i would prefer a dash of another breed to the mix , mainly for a touch of extra coat etc. has for the race ped animals they have neither the bone or frame structure of the ped show working types hence one more siuted to the field the othe the track , atb bunnys.

Depends on the individual dog, pre-ban I've seen some on roe and fox, doubled up though and they did the job

Well I can quite believe that.I've got a 6mth old whippet and the terrier influence is plain to see
