moley 115 Posted May 11, 2007 Report Share Posted May 11, 2007 YES I REMEMBER THAT JOKE ITS A HEDGE HOG twas a fooking great hedgehog aswell , it was flattened on the road about 10 yards from the dead rabbit had another this morning about 200 yds away, same way eaten,this time everything upto the back gone and the head eaten off, this one was pulled down the hole rather than out the hole, so i,m just wondering if it was a bloody great hedgehog,the other one had hedghog tracks all over the place , so i assumed it was the bugger flattened on the road,no tracks around this one as its all grass Quote Link to post

Now that does sound like rats, Moler. Or maybe there's just more hotchi's in the area mate? How about getting some cubbie's down and having a crack at catching the culprit? Be fasinating and a lesson for all of us to find out for sure what's doing it. Incidentally; You ever noticed how amazingly close to hedgehog a rats tracks can look? Suspecting hotchi, I've read rat tracks as theirs Happens! got a cage set straight away,then if it is a hedgehog i can release it these tracks were bigger than any rat i have ever seen, but i see what you mean the pelvis and most of the back leg bones are gone , the head is eaten away right back to the lugs , this rabbit is just a bit bigger than the last one , i,m am tempted to set a fenn in the hole but don,t want to catch miss tiggiwinkles Quote Link to post

Cats will skin the rabbit and pull it neatly inside out but not usually chew the ears off like the first one. Very odd OTC Quote Link to post

Did ye get the reading glasses on and have a good look at that area? What I'm thinking is how 1. Rats are back in the land now. 2. They tend to eat at faces and gut ends. 3. They'd likely leave incisor marks. Hotchi's, on the other hand, are 'chewers', aren't they. Differant dentition altogether. I've sat and closely watched one at work. They shear flesh off. I'd have thought very close examination might have revealed some level of splintering, vs. incisor scrapes on those bones? Gotta love the internet, haven't ye?! Quote Link to post

Eating the brains out of something? Chewing through its guts? Eyes even? 'So what?'. But targeting a rabbits ears ?! Somehow disgusting! Well, it's sure as hell not typical mustalid behaviour! That narrows it down. The gut eating, for me, points to rats too. It's just that I'd normally have liked to have seen some face action too. But maybe the ears give us that? moley 115 Posted May 12, 2007 Report Share Posted May 12, 2007 fox cub had a feral cat this morning in the cage, about 50 yards from the last eaten rabbit , there was also a big healthy dead rabbit in a trap not 5 yards from the cage , dunno if the cat was in before or after the rabbit got caught, reset the cage , looks like it might not have bin a hedgie after all that ate either rabbit , we all keep learning Quote Link to post
