Having same problem with mine after a walk he is limping with swollen knuckle

Took to local bone man and he fixed his back and hip and told me thus will have affected his tendons

After two days the dog has made a very noticable improvement

Do you mean the wrist? the knobbly bit about a quarter of the way up the dog's front leg, where it bends, which some people might compare to the knee but its not really, if you see what I mean. If both wrists are badly swollen it sounds like the dog has had a bad fall and has either suffered a sprain to the joint, or even a partial dislocation: bad swelling round joints should always been seen by an expert: preferably a greyhound vet, or a good bone man. Failing that, an ordinary vet.

Wrists are delicate things with many small bones and tendons, the great majority of injuries to them are much as a human twisting an ankle just a matter of over extending the joint whilst running/jumping etc. Pup may have done it before whilst playing etc and the walk showed it up.

If it was really just a walk then that would suggest an underlying fault with the joint or bone mineralisation, in which case a vet is needed.

What’s the dogs conformation like? Has it got a straight wrist or slightly bowed

With trauma injuries then rest, a few days of anti inflammatory medication and crossed fingers. If it’s a minor strain it will recover slowly if given time but many go on the be permanently wristy if its not taken seriously when it first happens.

On lead only exercise until completely symptom free, minimum of 6 weeks before even a minor strain will be properly repaired so even when symptom free be careful galloping on hard/uneven ground.

If swelling etc not settled in a day or so then it will need an x-ray to see if there’s a break.

Regards s

That's the biggest problem with this sort of thing: people tend to let the dog off the lead and let it run about when it stops being lame, or the swelling goes down: big mistake! Which is why I always advise seeing someone who really know what they are talking about: that way the vet/bone man can tell the owner to keep the dog on the lead for however many weeks is necessary: and then the owner MUST follow that advice. Too many people take matters into their own hands and think, 'oh the dog's not lame any more, I'll let it run', then the dog goes lame again and they're back to square one, or worse, as previously damaged ligaments etc have now suffered even more damage which will take even longer to come right, if they ever do.

What age was the dog when you started working him hard and what was the ground like he,s not much more than a pup now, running on hard ground after fast moving quarry can cause swelling on the wrists of young dogs .What x is it some dogs are still growing at 13 months and despite what many say running dogs hard and young causes exactly this problem.Hope he comes right with a rest and prob a visit to a good vet.

youve had some good advice on this post mate try get him to a greyhound vet or a vet thats been recomended because a lot of "pet" vets wont have as much experiance with running dog injuries atb sesku
