What is it with male dogs wanting to try your patience, my dog is 8 months had a perfect recall and now it's like it's falling on deaf ears, it's not all the time but iv seen alot of male dogs like this any ideas while he's young ?

i know what you mean my bitch does this was good for a while then had a 2 month spree were she would run and never come back from chasing another dog,seems to be doing ok again now shes 10 months.

he doesn't want to try your patience bud, he's torn between his prey instinct which is investigating interesting scents and such things which may lead to prey drive which is a state of mind he really wants to be in and going back to you which may not be all that appealing unless it has an aspect of drive attached to it, if you get my drift,

 

what im saying is you need to make yourself more interesting to the pup because all his instincts are pulling him in the opposite direction bud

i got a 9 month old pup dernt let him of he up and away come back when he feels like it could be up to half a hour later when he does come back he of again it doing my head in he not to bad when you take to the beach it when you get neary woods good luck

You need to create a desire in the dog for something you can use to your advantage,

it gives you a handle on him and it makes the dog want to be with you from the inside out, the dominance process of training wont work on a dog like that because he's nearly wild as it is and trying to dominate him will only make him wilder,

you establish a want in the dog for something that you are the access to and you have the key to controlling him, he needs to feel good being around you, the only reason he fecks off is because all you do is feed and clean up his shite, you dont stimulate his drive , which is the strongest pull in all hunting dogs,

ball pay , tug items , are all items that can be used, but you need to create an environment for the dog where he finds them stimulating, pm if stuck , best of luck ,

The one thing u can try as well is tidbits, e.g. treats, meat etc, dont shout at the dog even though u feel like killing him, praise him when he does come back and feed him a treat, he will associate recall with something nice to return to, and everybodys right, he will grow out of it.

on the subject of male/female, does any one else find male dogs easier to get clean day and night then bitches, dont know if its a co-oincidence but always find dogs a lot cleaner earlier then bitches, especially at night.

i can completely understand what your saying woodys mum, but when the energy level gets too high in a dog no amount of treats is going to make him see your point of view, because most times a lurcher is in that excited state of mind hes running away from us but if we can get the dog to listen to us in a highly excited state of mind, we can achieve a serious level of control in most situations,,

could be right what you say about dogs becoming clean, but where they fall down is pissing on the ferret box when older ,,

I posted the excact same other day had my dog out 13 month old he was bang on with recall then he bolts past me and runs off felt gutted and confused but reading this post has helped cheers lads

mine piss up anything, even each other simple when there kennelled i use a whistle to stop the dogs and get them to look at me, however its easy when your running an older dog alongside a youngster
