2.8 guy 403
This year im going to breed some runners for my own use, ive decided to use a labrador stud as i know of one i really like and its available to me to use, i was thinking just half lab greyhound and was going to put the feelers out for the best greyhound i could find, then i thought maybe go down the saluki greyhound track, i must admit i know very little about the saluki other than in there own right some are very good at what they do and i would say far better than the greyhound for that job, going back many years the saluki's i saw wasn't the brightest of things and few was any good, far from what i think of them now as there has been some really good breeding programs and good dog men working them. now like i said i know very little about the saluki greyhound and would be interested to here about experience with these hounds/ sizes, percentages, and strains would be interesting also what dogs seem to turn there hand to more than just the job they seem to be bred for , i watched a video called the eastern saluki and them dogs was GAME and hardy too Quote Link to post
fredthefrog 169
i dont know what you would gain from using a lab to breed a lurcher ... why have you chose a lab as your base..... it wouldnt be my first choice.... but grey or saluki grey sounds tops for the speed side of things.... dunno bout the lab part tho mate???? BEARINATOR 2,894
Everything pre-ban Fred , hard to answer that as I've seen good and bad dogs of all breeds. They were a bit too heavy for daytime hares though but on the right land they would take them. Good luck 2.8 with your breeding plans and I look forward to seeing the resultant litter and how they develop Quote Link to post
fredthefrog 169
if we was in pre ban times now i dont beleive this cross to be a suitable cross as i dont beleive a lab would have the minerals to do fox by number but i could well be wrong..... good luck with the breeding program 2.8 and all the best mate .....f t f Quote Link to post
BEARINATOR 2,894
Labs can be heart wicked Fred, my first working dog was a lab cross and she slayed every thing She once fecked off with a border terrier in her jaws the border never barked at us walking past again Quote Link to post

jezza 126
sounds a strange cross, look forward to see how they perform Quote Link to post
BEARINATOR 2,894
2.8 I'm biased as I have working greyhounds, owned saluki/greys in the past and won't own them anymore Quote Link to post
morton 5,368
I think that using a Lab as a base line is a step in the wrong direction, there are far to many,Proven, types about that would serve a better purpose and lend themselves better to the creation of a lurcher, your choice though and if it works for you, fair play.Ive seen Lab crosses[1/2 bred]decent nose, biddable, lacked pace. 1 Quote Link to post
2.8 guy 403
ive got a bull cross with some saluki in it and i would of said its made a big difference to the ones ive seen with none in but at one time i wouldnt have had any dog with saluki in it times change and so do your thoughts this is just research a think tank if you will Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
Once upon a time I would have said greyhound all the way but not now. Though I wouldn't say saluki cross either. What I would say is 'match dog'. Yer, saluki based but bred worker to worker for generations, dogs that kill for a living..! What I also would say is that i've seen a few dogs bred using a full breed (i.e. Labrador) and a match dog and the results have produced racier offspring than using greyhound blood, which with a heavier breed like a lab, could be the very ticket. 4 Quote Link to post
reddawn 2,173
well bred coursin dogs are just the greys of old imo Quote Link to post
moonlighter 1,164
Well bred coursing dogs have a lot to add to lurcher breeding imo, and are nothing like a greyhound. Quote Link to post
