Puppies and sheep

Recommended Posts

Your dog may still have it but soon most will loose it, not just you 99% of the breed in UK will end up looking the same but with no prey drive!

Shame, even if you stock break your young one chances are it will follow suit if older one chases sheep!

Why get a saluki? why not!!

Why do you guys think your the only ones allowed to own this breed? im trying to do whats best for my dogs and some of ya just wanna have a go!! They may be pets but just because she is not "worked" does not mean she is not allowed to behave like a saluki.

Labs were bred to retrieve Cargo or men that fell over board from ships surely thats classed as working but they havent lost the drive to retrieve since they have become pets, i know mine hasnt!!!!

is that really true about cargo? i thought they were bred to be thick as fook and jump into frozen lakes for ducks and geese, im sure labtastic will soon tell us

Dave, I am not trying to kill my pup's prey drive even if it was possible (which I do not believe it is with him anyway). I like him with it. He is welcome to all the squirrels and rabbits he can get as long as he realises he will never get away with doing something I do not want him to do. I got him well used to my horses and all the stock on the Forest as a pup. When his prey drive kicked in, the first I knew of it was when he suddenly rushed a grazing pony in front of us on the heath. He got called back (and broke the chase and came back staightaway) but that's when he went on the training line and I started to intensify the training. I do not care how much prey drive he has I would like to be the one in charge. He is my best mate and I want to be proud of him not have to keep him on a lead all the time to stop him from being a danger to himself and me if he gets caught doing what he should not.

If you cannot,or will not, learn the basic,s of stock training any dog, then im afraid you should never own a dog,no matter how misguided you may be.A dog trained to standing sheep is only part trained, when sheep can gallop excitedly past the mutt and the mutt ignores them, then your 1/2 way there.A dog broken to sheep will often be totally confused by lambs, especially when they frolic by bleating merrily, this is when the training begins again, when and only when the dog ignores lambs and sheep, over many hours of interaction with them, can you begin to feel safe, then i still prefer them under close control.

true mate, lambs can be a real tester for most dogs, unless they see alot of them. They are small and move differnt , always best to keep a eye on the dogs when lambs are about. I dont like really like lamping with sheep in the same field, Bryn is 100% no prob , but the amount of times rabbits run into the sheep and stops the dog for that few sec's , eaiser if they aint there .but you have to go where the game is i suppose .!

nothing to do with the stockbreaking issue but if you dont want to hunt an idea for your older dog and your pup when it is 12mths + would be a lure machine, would help channel that saluki instinct and energy into something both yourself and the mutts can participate in.
