Pellet selection

Recommended Posts

Hi there I have been playing around with 3 different types of pellets on a inch target at about 18 meters(limited to length of my garden) my gun has a bipod and I'd like to think I'm a good shot especially at that distance. The trouble is I see no real grouping differences between any of them I'm trying out crosman ultra magnums rws super-h-point and air arms Diablo field. Using a BSA hornet. I want to know from others experience if one is better, or the fact it makes no difference means I can choose any. The crosman and rws do sound to be moving quicker than the air arms but I'd put that down to weight I guess? Still no real accuracy change. I intend to shoot rabbit and pigeon would one suit one job better to the other. Is all this pellet selection for your gun just a myth? Sorry for all the questions In one and if some seem daft but had to ask cheers pete

Hey pete,

Out of those 3 pellet selections I would go with Air Arms field Diablo as they are domed and a fairly accurate pellet in most rifles. Over longer ranges those Air arms pellets will stay true. Saying that I have heard good things about those Crossman Ultra Magnums also. I wouldnt rate the RWS Super H points for hunting at medium to long range mate. Most pellets will give you the same result at the range you are shooting in your garden. Its past that mark that you will notice the group opening up. Others will be along shortly to give you better advice I am sure.

The RWS HP's are designed for close-medium range hunting (up to 20 yards) At 30 yards you will notice the differance

AAF's are a superb all founder in most rifles and I have been using them for years as well as FX pellets (slightly cheaper)

This week I have been using the CPUM's as my usual RFD has moved and they were the only decent name in the shop on the fishing tackle shop.

I have been exceptionally suprised by these  8mm wide one hole grouping at 30 yards!

Well Chuffed especially as these are cheaper than the FX

No it is not a myth, the BSA barrel is known for being one of the least pellet fussy on the market! I shoot the Crosman Ultra Magnums as I have had no bad pellets and with the Air Arms pellets I was throwing up to a third of a tin away! I am currently firing them through a BSA Super 10 and an HW100 (.177 and .22 respectively). Some barrels will not like certain pellets and others in the same make and model gun will. It is strange but true!

Why was you throwing the air arms away? So I would maybe notice a difference at a further distance. What's the reason behind different weights and what's grain stand for?

I was throwing them in the smelting pot for fishing lures because the skirt was so deformed. I do not like reforming damaged pellets. They were so bad that some would not go in the magazine. The tin was undamaged, perfectly fine, but the pellets were really beaten up. Since swapping not lost a pellet to damage but dropped a few! The AA tins are also lousy and the Crosmans are in decent screw top tins!

Different weights are due to pellet design, some pellets have more metal in them than others, for instance the Crosman Premier Ultra Magnum in .177 is a heavy pellet at 10.5 grain, Air Arms Field are 8.4 grains, 2.1 grains different! The heavy weight pellet works well, but because of the weight has a more curved flight path than a medium (AA) or light weight pellet!

Grains are an old imperial measurement it was based on the average weight of a grain of wheat!

why using hollow point against domed there not very acurrate would try rws superdomes but it all depends what your barrel likes

I was given them with the gun, I didn't know if this may have been because of the previous owner thought they suited the barrell, used the cross mans on my old springer and bought the air arms on recommendation from the guy at local gun shop. I seem suprised the air arms were damaged as my tin has a layer of foam either side of them and no damage to the skirts if anything the hollow points were sticking I'n my magazine.
