gquirke 1
Hi all, I have recently upgraded my .22LR to a .22 Hornet (CZ 527). I am thrilled with it. The ammo is expensive but for the amount of shots I fire in a year it is not overly so. My local dealer's have a small selection of Hornet ammo and one of the options he has is Federal Premium V-Shok Soft-Point 45gr. Have any of the other Hornet users on here used these and what are your opinions on them? Are the Federal Premier V-Shok generally an accurate round? Thanks. Quote Link to post
bunnybuster.ie 40
What made you go for the 22 hornet over a .223 when you upgraded. I don't have a hornet but any lads I know tend to use hornady v-max. The best thing to do is buy a box off ammo zero with this ammo and if it holds zero then stick with that ammo. Since I changed to the .223 I've stuck with the same bullet The Hornady 55gr Soft Point. It's never let me down yet. Ps wecome to the site. Quote Link to post
gquirke 1
I picked the hornet as I have a bit of a soft spot for it. I have used a couple in the past as some of my uncles had them and I always wanted one. I know a lot of lads go for the 223 over the hornet with better/cheaper ammo costs and the longer range. Thing is though, where I hunt the fields are relatively small so I don't need the extra range. I also dont tend to fire a lot of shots from the rifle as I am not into target or plinking so the ammo cost to me is relatively low (a box or 2 of 50 bullets) per year. The relatively low noise and low recoil of the hornet also appeal to me. I have a box of the 35gr V-Max and find them very good in my little experience so far. I was just asking if anyone had experience of the Federals as the bullets are heavier and would like to know if they are any good before I fork out on a box to compare with the V-maxs. Thanks for the welcome by the way Am finding tons of reading on this forum. 1 Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Hi mate as a hornet lover myself I have to say you have made a very good choice with a cz 527,I dont have any experience with v-shock but try a box and see how she groups,I have to say the best way to make the hornet shine is to reload for it,loads cheaper and much better than factory fodder,I currently load sierra 45grn soft points and I am getting sub half inch groups at 100 yds,I also got very good results with 35grn vmax but fing=d them rather expensive so its sierra for now. richmcgin 32
now then here i may be able to help, the v-shoc are a fantastic round if your rifle likes them, they are designed to shoot 1 moa groups but the nosler bt is a funny round it has a good bit of bearing surface and will not stabilize properly in slower rifling. now i have tried them in 50g 223 and they are not to good in my 1/12 twist, federal recon that the bullet is to long for 1/12 twist at that weight. so you realy have to select the right weight bullet for your twist, which will not always be the normal weight you would expect to be able to use. i have messed with the nosler bt bullet in front of several loads but i cant get them to work in my rifle, but as i said before that is because of my twist rate, but you may have better luck. gquirke 1
Thanks lads for the responses. I think I will go ahead and get a box and give them a try....another excuse for some shooting Charlie, I wish I could reload for the hornet. Unfortunately, that is not an option here in Ireland at the minute. I am hoping that it might be possible in the future though. As I said I love the hornet and the CZ527 is a lovely rifle. Light enough to carry around easily and nicely balanced. I will let you know how I get on with the Federal's over the weekend. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Good luck mate, let us know how you get on. Quote Link to post
richmcgin 32
have just looked them up nice looking gun but it has a 1:16 twist on a 21" barrel so thats about 1 1/4 turns, be careful about the weight of bullet you pick i would try 40g or lighter first. Quote Link to post
