Col; Hancock has probably forgotten more about dog's of all breed's than anyone on this site has ever known, IMO a very interesting and knowledgable guy who i never found to be patronising in any way.

Strange........... no mention of real lurcher work on the silly old git's site is there ?

There is a valid reason for that however........... non of his dogs are worked by him or anyone else !

Oh and no pictures of his rancid tumble down " kennels "........

Dirty old farmer

i can honestly say when i went down to check on and collect my pup the kennels where no where near as bad as i heard people say, im not sure if he has had new ones built but they were all in out house types of building and all had clean water food and dry beding (maybe he cleaned up just before i got there lol). the stud dogs are the only ones that were in outdoor kennels, and he was a nice enough bloke and had the time to answer any questions asked.

Brummy did you skip a couple of posts mate? This thread's about Colonel David Hancock, the writer. NOT Dave Hancock the lurcher breeder :victory: :thumbs-up: Ditch, I've read a few of his books (including the booklet-type "Old Farm Dogs" and "Old Working Dogs" (or whatever they were called lol) - interesting reads, and he does at least champion the working dog so fair play to the man

:) Cheers for that, Lawrence and Matti. Bit more like what I was looking for.

Actually, I was chatting about 'The Colonal' last night, with one of the most widely experianced Lurcher Men I've ever known. His angle was that the Col. spent his life cloistered in the British Library Reading Room, cribbing out bits about long extinct Dog types.

Fine! As I said to my mate there; The only records we have of such Dogs will now be buried deep inside ancient texts, probably penned by the likes of Ceaser and Pliney. If someone wants to make a life study of digging out such stuff and translating it, I'd be passingly interested in reading it.

Landseer painted an " Alpine Mastiff ". Don't suppose there are any of those around now either? Except that, wanting to demonstrate one of my own Dogs types to some people, and not then having a camera available, I realised that Landseer's depiction was actually about as near as it got. Fasinating!

And that's about my own level of interest. I'm no more a " Mastiff Man " than I am a " Lurcher Man ". I'll obviously never get to keep some long extinct breed of Mastino. But I wouldn't mind sharing a seat next to the good Colonal and watching the pictures he unearths and asking his opinions of them. That's all. Seems like a look through one or two of his books may bring me some quiet and innocent pleasure then? I'll bump them up a bit higher on my ' Must get round to ' list :) Thanks.

That Alpine Mastiff is a Noble looking beast, like two differant dogs moulded together just behind the shoulder! it's got a bit of a 'boultbee' going on with it's neck, it's bigger than it's head! still artists impression I suppose?? and at $1600, a pretty investment (if you could afford it!)
