Days Rat shooting deep in the wilds..... with two top lads!!!

Recommended Posts

Hello people of the HLF, This is just a quick little one from a nights shooting last night which I was so kindly invited along to by Si and Davey.

Si, thank you first off for the hospitality both at yours on the Friday and today mate, much appreciated mate. Also thank you for the insight into the capabilities of sub 12ft lb air rifles ;-).

Davey, first off pleasure to meet you last night, just the top bloke I expected and great sense of humour to boot. Also again thanks for the advice, hint and tip, also for helping to tune the zero of the ultra, shooting a dream a now, big thumbs up.

Right the shooting, well it was about 13.30 when I landed at Si’s, had the usual lads talk and bit of food then hit the road for the farm, arriving about an hour and half later. The farm it’s self was a lovely farm, and as I suspected a phone call on the way confirmed Mr. Thomas had already opened his nights account with a bunny, meeting us with a pleasant smile and a pair of crocks on to boot (top hunting fashion mate haha) bunny having been on the receiving end of a well-placed kill shot.

After some zeroing, and messing around to get our eye in and try some new pellets, we then had a nice shower and off into the farm we went. After a quick chat, Si was the first out blokes to get into the action, closely followed by me into the first pen. This is where the fun started, within 15 minutes rats were hitting the deck left, right and pretty much any were, it was alive with the scally tails.

Si, being the gent he is took me to a lovely spot about 15-20 yards to a nice hot spot, I didn’t wait long before I was on the score board; as did we all. This was to set the trend for the night, there were literally more rats than you could shake a stick at (some that big they would probably beat you with your own stick haha). This was like this until about mid night, and then the air temperature dropped, the rats decided to go and get warm and business was no longer BOOMING.

However, things picked back up and more rats started to fall, just to tell you some were HUGE, I take a size nine, but had to have a ten as it was what willies were left. Some of these rats were easily body alone as big as if not over the size of the wellies. Not to fear though as the Hw100, AA s410 (both .177) and the Ultra (.22 cal) (also the xvs for a while) was stopping the little buggers in their tracks.

This gave a nigh count of around 6o (average as it was either between 58 to 60ish, as some were shot after the main count) a very respect full total, considering they had a less experienced shot amongst the ranks. Overall it was a TOP night, with TOP guys. ( sure Si or Davey may add a few shots to show a bit, be aware my scope didn’t have PA so my footage will not be a clear as it should using the new didgy add on, from NIGHT HUNTER with a lamp with an IR filter.

THANKS LADS, Right off to get a shower… had no sleep for over 24 hour’s haha….  :D

A nice and accurate post mate. Yeah i believe it was 63 rats we managed to find and pick up, probably another 40 to 50 killed that we could not retrieve or were eaten by the pigs.

You shot really well last night with your ultra Gaz, if anything I was the worst shot because if im honest i reckon i missed a good 30 to 40 only killing around 30 to 40 including the ones I knew were dead but i couldn't retrieve plus the ones i shot without the add on fitted in the morning.

Your kill to shot ratio was much higher along with Davy s ;). Moral of that story though is dont change your primary zero range just prior to ratting without learning your new aim points first :icon_redface:.

I think i made up for it when it got light though on my normal zero range with that wood pigeon in the ever greens at a good distance :icon_eek: , the bunny at over 50 yards with a perfect brain shot and the 2 dead branches I cut in half for you with 4 shots each time (pellet touching pellet) at a lased 50 metres :boogy: .

Glad you enjoyed yourself as well pal, that's what is all about really and meeting like minded lads.

Your welcome to come again any time  .

Si.

The pigs were brutal with the rats if they dropped into the pens... :icon_eek: . Thanks again and ill defiantly do that again buddy.

A very interesting and enjoyable post that Elmer sir. I haven’t been on here for a week or two now as my back as been really playing up after the operation but I really enjoyed your little tale there. I’ve met Si before myself. He showed me that night vision thingy he and his partner have been testing, and wow is that some equipment. He is a real gentleman and not at all like I thought he would be in real life. Not that I thought bad of you Si in the first place. I was just shocked how modest you are in person and keen to help others out. Anyway back to your post sir. What’s this bit I read about "Also thank you for the insight into the capabilities of sub 12 ft lb air rifles ;-)" I think that would have been a very interesting thing that happened there and I would be very interested to read more about what the insight entailed. There is just so much rubbish that goes on in the air rifle section. I have noticed this myself in my relatively short period of time I’ve been a member and its always nice to read something different and interesting so please expand sir.

Tanican.
