Getting rid of rabbits on the allotment

Hi, wonder if you guys can help or at least advise. Have had a plot on an allotment for over a year. During this time we have had rabbits but nothing that a decent fence has stopped so not been a major hassle until now. There appears to be a lot more and even though fences are dug into the ground and at least 4 ft high, nearer 6ft in places they are getting into loads of plots, so whatever we are literally planting out is suffering and there is only so much protection you can use before it becomes a hinderance to tend to.

 

The plot is owned by the council who surprise surprise say its our problem. Some rabbit traps have been set but they remain untouched, so we appear to have clever, olympic pole vaulting rabbits on the plot. Someone did mention that ferrets are a good way to deter rabbits and that part of the problem may be the amount of brambles on the other side of the alloted plots which have been left to go mad hence provide a safe haven. If ferrets do indeed do the trick where would I go to get someone who had ferrets who could perhaps have a bit of fun on the plot?

get people to take alook under there sheds. once there in they will dig under sheds and u wont see em. i had no end of mice under my shed recently. little bugger eat as much as rabbits.

Traps have been placed at various holes but like I say they aren't going for it.

What kind of traps you using if its cage traps,they have no need to enter,if the allotments are full of good things to eat,if its been fenced off then they might be getting in through holes in the mesh,if so snares will sort them out

you need to walk the perimeter fixing the fence or setting traps as you go then look at places like sheds or bushes where once there in they would have cover to hide in and secure or trap those

You sure it's not rats eating your crops ???? It will look very similar to rabbit damage warm composts are a winter haven for rats iether way I could help : ) where there's holes there's goles,

Get a couple of good trust worthy lads with ferrets to vist occasionally.Talk to the plot owners telling them what you intend to do and also the site steward if you have one.

It may well be Rats, although a few rabbits have been seen on plots but the more I look around my plot the more it looks like these rabbits would have to be pole vaulters. Just need to work out how to tackle the rats without poision as I dont want it transferring to my actual plot as a result.

You could use terriers and a smoker, turn out your compost heap they may well be there , general tidying will disturb the critters chances are they've been over wintering somewhere , if your neighbouring plots are unkempt have a word lying wood and bricks are a favourite, set traps but rats are wise unlike mice , terriers and smoker : ) , have a look on you tube if you haven't seen it before ,

use the remenants of the ferret cage round the allotment - an old gamekeeper told me at a country show and i was sceptical but tried it, rabbits and rats cant stand the smell of ferret poo and stay away i have only had one rat and no rabbits in my allotment after being bombarded last year in the chicken shed with them

I had rats in the ferret shed last year ???????

I dont know about the ferret poo but the actual ferret hot em shifted : )
