Roscrea Working Dog Lurcher Racing ( Co Tipperary )

Recommended Posts

Roscrea, Co Tipperary yesterday, was the venue for a great days racing hosted by Shane Lee and his brilliant committe and helpers. The alarm clock buzzed at 4.00am, feet out on the floor,up and away to join up with the rest of the crewe at Newry. Met up there with Bluebell and her husband Patsy Mc Coy who led the way, Nigel Greer and Billy Craig, stopped briefly up the road for breakfast, and then headed for Roscrea, Co Tipperary. As we were approching Roscrea, our crewe was joined by Martin Tucker and his wonderful son. Arriving at the venue, we were met by some friends who steered us into our parking place, and that is where an unforgettable day began.

The weather was like a summers day, with a slight nip in the air.The centre of County Tipperary is known as 'the Golden Vale', a fertile stretch of land in the basin of the River Suir, which crosses the county from north to south. County Tipperary has a strong sporting history and is home to the Gaelic Games of Hurling, Gaelic Football,Camogie and Handball, and great Hunting Men with their top winning racing dogs. The quality of the dogs running yesterday at this venue in my estimation was a hundred percent. All winners.

Billy Craigs dog " Sandy " came very close to winning yesterday. This dog is a force to be reckoned with, and a winner waiting in the wings. Billy was so proud of " Sandy " yesterday, as were we all. Sandy gave the opposition a race for his money in the semi final yesterday. Well done Sandy and Billy. Nigel Greer and Billy Craig went home two very happy men yesterday, knowing they have a star in the making.

A big congratulations to all these heat winners and any other winners I did not manage to get. Thank you all for making the day so enjoyable and exciting.

And finally, a big thank you to " Bluebell " Deidre Mc Coy for taking the photographs, and recording everybodys moment of glory.Deidre you are gold dust, and thank you for all those lovely memories in photographs. What can I say about Shane Lee and his committe and helpers. You organised and produced a great days racing in a very professional way and held your racing in an excellent venue. Your hospitality was so much appreciated. It was nice to see Toilets at the venue, which gives the women folk and children dignity and privacy.( Show organisers take Note ) Also, please convey our thanks to the lady, who is the owner of the field where the venue was held, who introduced herself to me and my friends and offered us tea and refreshments. It was so kind of her. A lovely lady. A great family day out was had by all. So So tired today, but already looking forward to next years Racing day out.Well done Shane.

O Pigsy how I love you. Can you not read. Can you not see I congratulated Martin Tucker, along with the other to winners Robert Maloney, and Pat Lee. Martin Tuckers dog "Winnie " was Top Dog and ran a brilliant race. We even stopped with Martin on the way out of the field and congratulated him. Martin Tucker is a real gentleman and breeds top dogs.We race our Whippets occassionally, and to be quite honest, a cat could beat them, but it gives us great enjoyment at our age , and we thank God for every day of our life that we are in good health and still able to do so. Its a real bonus when we get our photograph taken.

Pigsy, Billy Craigs dog won a terrific battle against a real troop of first class dogs on the day,and I think its nice to give some pride and praise to the under dog on the day, to encourage him to come back and fight another day.Fortunately or unfortunately thats the way my mind works.I am a woman, and does not hide behind a ficticious name on any form.

Pigsy, would you not better off to try and see the good in people, or else go and have a go at some of the men on this form, someone your own stature, instead of attacking a poor defenceless woman, who only has the best interests of the sporting, hunting, showing and racing community in her heart and writes and praises them no matter what their failings are. Pigsy I am not perfect, but I try to get it right most of the time. Sorry if it is not good enough for you Pigsy.

Well said Margaret i think you do a great job on here putting up all the results , you do this for everyone unable to get to the shows and a few people have even said that after reading your post they felt like they were there . My son loves to see his name on your post and you and john are always there to tell him how well he has done . Dont take any heat from the people on here that seem to only come on here to run people in to the ground .

WNM,

I see you joined the forum yesterday and it must be a record - FIRST FOUR POSTS FILLED WITH CRITICISM!

I wasn't at Rosscrea but it was good to read Margaret's report. As LesleyD says her reports serve a very useful purpose and that's why I am going to show my support for her and the positive people on this forum by asking her to become a regular contributor to our magazine Irish Countrysports and Country Life ( free to read online at www.countrysportsandcountrylife.com) . If she will acept this then I am sure she will invite people to send her news. Goodness knows this is time for positive publicity for terriers & lurchers in Ireland. We need unity in Ireland from ALL lurcher, terrier & whippet owners and at Ballywalter we will have Barrie Wade who could indicate the way forward. With respect to other UK guys who have made comments about our events we welcome CONSTRUCTIVE criticism - preferably if you have been at our shows!, we would love to see you over here with your dogs- and don't mind you taking the top prizes and we like to see you offering to judge at our events, and running qualifiers for our events. What we don't need is more sniping and controversy - as it would appear we have plenty of home bred snipers!

I would like to add my congratulations to Martin ( who I don't know terribly well but who impressed us by sportingly offering to give his prize back when there was controversy over his Non Ped whippet winning the race for Non Ped/Unregistered whippets at Birr). Also to Billy Craig who I understand has come back into the game with what last year I thought was a superb looking dog which featured in the publicity shots for our fair. Well done Billy I thought it looked like one that could run!

And finally my congratulations to Shane Lee and the boys and ( ladies) of the Rosscrea Club you are getting quite a reputation for your organising skills. The Directors of the Birr Fair and our hosts Lord & Lady Rosse were all highly impressed at your smart turnout in club shirts from young to old ( sorry chairman!) at the press reception - great for the press photographs that appeared - portraying terriers and lurchers in a most favourable sporting light. We were all highly impressed by the manner in which you ran the racing and many of your innovations will be implemented at Shanes Castle. Finally thanks to your stewarding of the rings for the show we had a superb happy family atmosphere round the rings. And Matt Lee ( no relation) was happy to step aside and let your club run the show and racing in 2012 although he will assist if required.

Now no more HL for me today as I am off racing at Downpatrick!
