Millet 4,497 Posted March 20, 2012 Report Share Posted March 20, 2012 If your dad own's a farm you are laughing.. ..get some tin sheet's layed down near to where you think they maybe rat's and place a bit of wheat or barley underneath..leave them for several day's and go back with the lamp and lift them..if you are certain they is a rat under one try boxing it in with some more sheet's so it can't escape..but if you don't have enough sheet's block all the escape hole's up... Your pup is still young and doing what puppies do but he will be learning on the way..i have a terrier here that would not kill a thing till he hit 10mth old and all's he would do would play with mice and not hurt them up until then.. What i did with the pup i have now, a Plummer, was to take him to a wood were i know from past experiance held alot of Hares laying up through the day, i,d sit in the edge of the wood with the wind off my back about half a hour before dusk and liston too and watch for the Hares coming out of the wood onto the fields, it drove the pup mad, i let him chase a few accross the field untill he worked out the noise,s he could hear in the woods were Hares and Rabbits in the brambles, that set him off bushing and now, still not 6 months, bushes better than any pup i,ve seen for his age, he,s since progressed onto rats. If your having trouble with him scenting my advice would be to take him on the land early on a damp morning, the damp grass will hold the scent better, it doesnt hurt to let the pup smell a fresh dead Rabbit or Rat so he ,s at least got some idea whats about, find some fresh road kill if your struggleing, ATB with it and lets us know how you get on, regards, buster. JRT27 0 Posted March 20, 2012 Author Report Share Posted March 20, 2012 Ok I will try this as there is sheeting laying near his chicken sheds were they took a barn down, I will put some corn down as I'm sure there is rats in with the chickens, and I no he will miss more then he catchs to start with but I will be happy that he learning to hunt them! I have seen them climb up brick wall's so im sure chicken wire would be no problem.. ..
