Rolfe 2
I have been a pigeon shooter for years........just deeks, real birds and the odd flapper have done me ok till now, but i was thinking about joining the 21st century getting a pigeon magnet and i have seen various sorts at various prices. My question is: Are there any do's and donts and what would be the best sort to buy, 2 arm 4 arm etc.......plus battery requirements, on-off switch boxes etc? Any sensible suggestions would be much appreciated Quote Link to post
Chid 6,519
What ever magnet you go for get a set of Hypa flaps pigeons for it , friend of a friend was shooting using just a magnet with Hypa flaps and no decoys and you should of seen them coming in . We use a 2 arm one and does good for us we don't have a speed control or on off switch as it broke so just wired direct to battery which is a 12v 17amp one . Quote Link to post
Ratsmasher 36
Dont bother with one of the expensive ones either, I got a 50 quid show deal and it works fine, I normally just whack on some dead birds once I get a brace because that is when they really work atb Ratty Quote Link to post

WILF 46,775
Look for a used one matey, around me everyone was using them and the birds were flaring off no question......they came in nicely to FUDs because not many lads were using them Just like fishing, I suppose you have to keep ringing the changes but I wouldn't spend a lot of money If I was you Quote Link to post
Guest cookiemonsterandmerlin
Hi Rolfe How much do you shoot as it depends on usage if you go alot a cheap one will not last that long if you out 2/3 times a week. I have two one thats from ukshootingwarehouse circa 2006 and the other thats near 20 years old from pinewood. The pinewood even though not cheap is like new still with failure of the internal parts where the shootwarehouse one has been back 3 times for a rebuild. For me two arms is plenty on a whirly and if you have alot OSR shooting a whirly is a must. But like said birds in certain areas have suffered with over shooting of birds over whirlys and have caused a shyness to being draw even putting them off. A flapper I think is more useful in todays modern pigeon shooting put that on a fenceline and they go nuts. ATB Cookie Quote Link to post
Rolfe 2
Thanks for all the replies guys......certainly food for thought. On drilling where the deeks stand out nicely i have always had good bags just using dead birds in cradles and the odd flapper to catch the eye but drilling is few and far between around here now and it's mostly OSR and they have so many fields to choose from. I was thinking of using the magnet as a bit of a draw to some sparse areas of OSR to pull the flighting birds from other fields. Like suggested i will look out for a second hand one locally and see how it performs, the Hypa-Flappers look brilliant on the demo video....and i am tempted to get some as i think they would perform just as well set up into the wind as a static flapper if i didn't go for the magnet. Rolfe. They are. Last summer i purchsed my first pigeon magnet , by memory i paid about £70, and it came with 2 free foam pigeons. I then decided to buy 2 Hypa Flaps from the ukshootwarehouse to put on the whirley, and combined, the two really do draw in the old woodies, John Quote Link to post
Denny essex 15
Ive used hypaflaps fore about 5 years and they do work well, they add a little extra movement that real birds dont , but certain days real birds have to be the deal. One problem with hypaflaps is they do not work too well in heavyish winds, the wings fold over and if you try to match the wind speed with the magnet to stop the fold over the rotary can begin to look like a helicopter and does not do the bird pulling job at that speed.
