you could put down a deposit on a family house with a low mortgage and rent it out? It could put a few hundred quid in your pocket every month, pay a bit to a letting agent and you have f**k all work to do. There are risks, but it should be fairly secure...that's what I would do if I already had a house anyway.

 been down that path just sold one and the others just gone on the market -- i`m goin into holiday lets-- caravans for a few year .. got a bit of spare to inveast before i downsize ..

Do you mind me asking how you managed to save the original investments up? Just for inspiration, I haven't got a hope of inheriting anything and I would like to own my own house one day, but the prospects seem quite bleak...

if he needs advice on where to put it I would guess it's a payout of some description, if he'd saved all that he wouldn't need advice on what to do.

Well that's my problem sorted then, just need to sell all my spare houses and land... You must be part of the generation when you could buy a house for £30k and sell it for £130k a few years later, people just don't realise how lucky they are. I need to save 20k or so to get a mortgage, so if I could somehow save £100 a month then maybe in 20 years I could own a house, at todays prices...by then I will probably need 40k. Bit of a lost cause.
