Guest Lurcherbitch
Yes!!! A rescue dog will work for you, BUT!!!!! you still have to put the work into them. snoopdog 1,256
Well its only 6 months old so he has a chance with it. My advice to him would be to spend the summer concerntrating purely on bonding with the wee dog and training it some basic commands. A good recall, break it to livestock, train it to carry if it shows the slightest interest in fetching things back to you, and get it jumping. Then once hes built up trust with the dog and knows it will listen to him and come back when called etc start working it and see how he gets on good advice sjm.. just what the lad needed .....i think paitence is a big factor to .. SONNY 0
I got my dog from a rescue at 18 months. It does take a lot of patience as you have to start from scratch with basic obedience .He's never going to be the best dog around but he does ok on the lamp for me & to be honest if i was a better trainer he'd be a better dog.Glad your mate's giving it a go & best of luck. Guest MOLLY
I think Wilf like myself gets frustrated. The general feeling from we get told is rescue dogs will never work properly, they are in rescue because they were/are no good. That you must have a dog from 6wks old to stand any chance. IMO, the only difference is 'sometimes' a rescue may take a bit more time to train. My lad was about 12mths when i got him. Bonding has never been a problem, he is pathetically loyal....perhaps because he came from rescue kennels? He is no world beater by any stretch of the imagination, and has his faults....faults caused by me because he did not even know what a bunny was the first time he saw one, so was unsoilt untill i spoiled him But he has the heart and the drive and will run his legs off. The biggest number of rabbits in one long night was 20 out of 40++ runs over 4hrs, and has had accidental Roe and fox, loves to rat and is a natural at bushing with the terriers. He will retrive if he feels like it and is terrible for hunting up...both human error. Tell your mate to take it slowly...just as he would with a young pup, dont think because it is older it will have more wisdom cos it wont.....6mths is still very young anyway. Good luck. MOLL.
