PlasticJock 539
Apologies for posting yet another 'What gun/calibre' thread, but I need some advice... After doing my DSC1 to appease the gods of licensing (And to get more knowledge), I'm putting in for my FAC. I want a .22lr for rabbits etc. Now, originally I was going for a .22-250 for fox as well. Then I got permission for deer, and even though the .22-250 would do for smaller species in Scotland, it got me thinking about either a .243, or .308, to double as a fox and deer rifle and save me from having to buy 3 rifles. I'm used to shooting 7.62 so I don't think there'd be any problems in getting a .308, but what are everyone's thoughts on an all round fox/deer calibre? Cheers Edited March 16, 2012 by PlasticJock Quote Link to post
GRAM71 29
243?, my cousin is a park ranger and that's what he uses, or if you don't mind reloading, either 6.5x55 or i have heard good things said about 25-06, I do know an old fella out my way who uses his 308 for everything, it's a bit over the top imo, but does the job, he uses 100gr hp's on fox. I don't reload Yes given the choice I'd probably use a .308 as a 'multipurpose' calibre (apart from small game), but as you say for the most part it's overkill. Having said that, it's better to have it available than not Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,936
.243 Does it all, I`ve had mine forever, and many times I`ve thought aboot a wee foxing gun,, 220 swift, 223 etc,, but why? seriously 243 does the lot, fast, can be as heavy as you need, and is THE most popular round for a damn good reason. 160 quid Parker Hale, 243, bingo! Cheers Rake I've always had a thing for Parker Hales... They used to be the Army's sniper rifle, and I've heard enough stories about them to make me seriously consider getting one. Where would you buy one from nowadays? Anything I buy has to be reliable and accurate, that's all I'm interested in. Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
.243! I have .223, .243, .308, pretty much the only time the .308 comes out is for Boar or Target work. The .243 knocks down every deer in this country and with the potential of the 55-58g ballistic tips is an exceptional Vermin round as well! Edited March 16, 2012 by Deker Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
dual purpose, only the .243 gets my vote but then again i'm biased....lol i had a 6.5 x 55 se and only used it for deer, which was not very much at the time due to work, bought a tikka m595 .243 s/s and loved it to bits, due to funds sold the 6.5, used the .243 loads, deer and fox, as well as targets, got to know the rounds, progressed my skills, and now i have got a semi custom .243, in my old tikka, i used 58g v mmax or 70 g blitz kings new gun i have 1 in 9 twist, and shoot 87g v max, and 95g sst, and 105 a max for deer, And, get whatever gun you feel like but you won't find a more suitable round that does a great job, and isn't overkill on fox or deer if you dont reload, its popular for a reason, it works providing you do your bit, snap.
