moderator problem

Recommended Posts

posted this on another forum just wonderd if anyone else know's

i bought a new moderator for my 22lr

first time out i heard a high piched ting noise ?

i was getting 2 or 3 in a 1 inch square out of a 5 mag and the rest flyer's thinking it was clipping

i took it to the gun shop and spoke to the manufacturer he recommended drilling the baffles out to 7 mm

which was done by the shop they said it looked like it had been clipping on two baffles ?

took it out today and the first bullet a magtech 22 banged as if i had no silencer on the next few ok

i then tried eley 22 and one out of 15 banged as if i had no silencer on

cci 25 bullet's two banged as if i had no silencer on

the silencer was on at all times and the rifle very accurate

just wondered what you think ?

the manufacturer and the shop say it's not the moderator

cheer's

Hi

I'm not a moderator expert by any stretch of the imagination but from what you say and assuming all the different brands of bullets don't have hv rounds mixed in lol it surly its the mod, never had that happen ever, every one I've had on a rifle over the years has been ok,not had rounds clip the baffles that's quite scary, unless anyone else has a idea of what's occurring, by the way what mod is it?

do you notice any excessive movement when you screw it on the end of the barrel?

it does sound like you've got some hv rounds mixed in there, but i couldn't say for sure, can you strip the mod and see if there's any damage?

Its not possible that it is the mod. as the mod has no dynamic state unless it is not fitting the thread properly so every time you shoot the mod will do the same job. i have had rounds clipping a mod before but the dealer just changed the mod.

A few things to look at.... why did they drill out the baffles on a .22lr mod, to 7mm...?

You may as well not have a mod on at all...!!!!

secondly was the threading job done by a professional, And is the mod seating square to the bore...!!!!

Too many Good machinists think that because they are good with a lathe that they can do a threading job,

When in fact they simply cant...

Are the threads square to bore, or threaded to barrel ...!!!!!

hope this helps,

Snap.

If ammo was hitting the mod previously you do not drill it out, you check the barrel thread and bore centres and check the mod alignment!

Plenty of sub sonic ammo goes super sonic, it happens all the time!

Just the same, nobody can answer this without more info!

Quality ammo less so than some. The MPI can change quite considerbly with the change in velocity, bullets rattling around the transonic stage are not the most accurate.

Its the Transonic bit that is misunderstood by most people who think it is a constant destabilising effect that occurs during the deselaration of a projectile. this is not so. people look things like that up on Wiki and either misunderstand what it says or fail to understand the diferences between theory and proven fact.

But yes i agree about the odd subsonic going a bit too quick.
