Night fishing for Pike

Went on my first night fishing trip this Saturday just gone, just me and a mate and a shed loads of gear, which to be honest 3/4 of it wasnt even fishing tackle!

 

Got to the water at about 4.30pm and because we arent allowed to park on the farm, we had to lug all the gear up the long road up to the resevoir and with all the gear we had brought, it felt like we were never going to get there, who needs the gym!

 

Rods in water at about 5.30pm, so we settle down with a brew and just waited, my mate was saying pike fishing is normally at its best just as the light fades and first thing in the morning when the light is appearing, is there any truth in this at all?

First alarm starting pipping at 7.30pm and then off it screamed, i strike, and im in! By this time its pitch black and even though we had brought all this stuff none of us had brought a lamp, duh The fish puts up a pretty good fight, keeps shooting straight down to the bottom when i get it to the surface and after a few mins, its in the net! It looked bigger than the 12pound one i had a few weeks ago, but after weighing it, it was just short of 11, but i was happy either way!

 

 

Fish back in and rod back out, it was all pretty quiet for a few hours now, we tried to get comfortable and maybe our heads down, but then at about 12.30am i had just driffed off, then my alarm just screamed off without any warning, still half asleep we both couldnt get the tent door open, i then ran towards my rod, knocking three other rods over in the process, struck and i was in, started fighting it then it just shot to the bottom and stayed there and didnt want to move, it just stopped running and stayed at the bottom, i applied abit more pressure to try and get it to move but nothing and then i tried again, and the hooks came out!! Gutted!

Anyone had a pike do that before? It felt like a belter the short time i had it on!

Rod went back in the same place and i went on to miss another two runs, one pike even had the cheek to bite one bait in half before getting off my hooks!

We had about an hour of half of action, and then everything died down about 2am so i got my head down again untill about 4.30am and off my rod went again another strike and i was in this was a jack so was swiftly landed and was about 4pound ish!

 

 

 

Nothing much more happened, morning came and we decided to throw in the towel at 9.30am after it went dead and nothing was taking the bait anymore and to be honest, we both just wanted to go home! Probably be the last trip out piking for us but might try fishing for them in summer, anyone fish for pike in the summer, how do you find it? Any tips will be helpfull!

had some cracking session on pike at night especially on pressured waters

summer fishing can be good sport on the lures bud the fish are more active

but i prefer to dead bait in the winter you get a better stamp of fish

Good fishing there pal, the pike that hit the bottom & never moved most probably caught you in a ''Snag'' i let the line go free when this happen's because sometime's they set you free by themselve's lol i dont fish for pike in the summer because they are supposed to take much longer to recover when there's isn't much ''Oxygen'' in the water & can corse death

Ahh i see, ive never tried for Pike in the summer, but if thats the case i might give it a miss, im guessing this is the reason why we pike fish in the winter? Ive always fished for pike in the winter and never knew why.

enjoyed that skinnyman,traditionally dawn and dusk are the best times,but if had to pick just one id say dusk.just to contradict that one water i used to fish you could set your watch by em,two o clock in the afternoon regardless of weather wed get a good hour and then nothing till dark,youll probably know the water lymm damm. atb dave

I also enjoyed that, northern lad i have also had certain waters switch on at different times, and when you learn the times they feed on certain water,s, you can switch between them and hit them at the right time, good luck.
