Rare day out.

Recommended Posts

What with one thing or another, a days Ferreting has become a pretty rare occerance for me this year, but I made time on Saturday, got to my permission at about 11am, (partly due to my hangover, but mainly due to my lazy arsed buddy's, equally bad hangover,)

We got to the first warren, which is only a Little 7 hole'er, but has always produced at least 2 or 3 pot fillers. ;-) nets were all set, collars fitted and checked, and in goes my little Jill.

She's only down a couple of minutes and BANG, a rabbit bolts from one of the holes but misses the net :-(

"WHO THE F£&K SET THAT NET?" I asked my gradually sobering partner in crime, (knowing full well it was him) only to be greeted with a rather sheepish look.

Well the Jill darts back down, and I can hear the unmistakable sound of Rabbit Hooves underground, but this time there are no signs of any bolting bunny, after 15 mins or so, out comes the Finder, and sure enough the Jill is in one place, and knowing this little girl will hang on until the prey stops moving, I decide to dig the 3ft down to her, what a bloody dig, rocks, roots and hard clay, but eventually broke through into the run, by which time the Jill had been out for about 10 minuets, but the rabbit was still there so that was one back for the Pisseads!

Filled the hole back in, and as my Jill was showing no more signs of interest, we decided to called time on that burrow.

Next up, we decided to have a look at a part of my permission that I rarely go to, as there is usually a lot of quarrying works going on, but they have recently moved away.

When we arrived, there was a 8ft high bank about 45mtrs long, with approx 30 holes running along either side.

Now feeling a lot more sober, it looked quite Daunting considering I only had the one top class Jill and a very uninterested young Jill with me, but What the Hell, we're were there, the sun was shining and the headaches had gone, so we set about netting up the 60 odd holes,

Sometime later. :-) we were ready to go, "You Sure Those Nets Are Set Properly?" I asked my buddy, still a little annoyed at the earlier mistake.

OF COURSE! Came the ubrupt reply, satisfied, I entered my top litte albino Jill, 5 mins past, then,BANG, BANG. Two in the nets, one either side of the bank. I clambered down to dispatch the one my side, and had to laugh at the sound of breaking branches and cursing of stinging nettles comming from the other side, as my buddy half scrambled half fell down the steeper side of the bank :-)

Anyway, both rabbits dispatched and bagged quickly, the Little Jill is still down, waited for a good 20-30 mins, and though I'd better find out what she's up to, sure enough, she's stationary, this time about 4ft down, but this bank was bliss, made up of soft old top soil, it only took about 5 mins to dig down to her, and there she was taking a fair bit of stick from the back legs of a largish buck, so out he came with a little persuasion from me, as i looked back in the freshly dug hole, the Jill is getting stuck into another, so out it comes the same way as no1, another look back, and all I can see is the end of the Jill's tail, but she's obviously getting stuck in again, so hand, head and shoulders reaching full stretch I just manage to get no3 out of the same hole. Happy Days!

Off goes the Jill again, and eventually bolted 4 more over the next hour or so.

When we got to ten, we decided to call it a day, pretty sure there were more to be had, but I don't have to clear this permission, so left a few for another time.

All in all, although I dont get out as much as I would like, it was a bloody good day.

Still a little annoyed about that first net though. Hahahaha.
