fat man 4,741
Was chatting with a man this eve that dug to terriers most of his life and as he was looking at my dogs in kennells he asked me if i could call any of them out when they were to ground.I said no and would not be happy if i could as prey drive cannot be great if they can be called of there game when up close and personal. He then told me 1 of the best terriers he ever worked could be whistled out when ever he wanted and that he accounted for 100,s of foxs with this dog as the fox would bolt soon after the dog was out,BUT,if it was a dig he wanted then the same dog would stay until dug to.Has anyone else owned or seen a terrier work like this. hogie 103
a mate had a we patterdale bitch that had a gd few hundred digs under her belt that could be called of she was the best dog ive ever worked and afew boys that have been digging 30years say she was up with the best they've seen over the years and she put plenty of good dogs to shame and never walked in her workings days unless she was called out Quote Link to post
Mosby 355
My best two dogs I could call out. One I still have the other is dead now. I think it is not down to drive but down to the dog knowing it must obey and respecting the alpha at all times. I have had some very shite dogs that would stay to ground forever. But they wouldn't push to the game either. Just stay where the going got tough and bay til I dug a stupid hole to nothing. I've only seen one good dog in fact that couldn't be called off. If a dog's drive can be controlled to not kill chickens, sheep, house cats then it should be able to be called off game. I'm not as seasoned as most who have spoken up on this thread but I have seen a few damn good dogs and the majority could be called off. There are problems that many terriermen have with terriers that I can just never figure out. The big one in America is skunks killing dogs. WTF?! The dog should hunt what you want to hunt. Good dogs should be easily broken off of bad game like skunks. Just as a hound shouldn't riot on deer. It all comes down to the dog respecting the alpha and having half a brain in my opinion. And of course the time being put into the dog - not just hunting time but bonding and basic training and breaking time. 2 Quote Link to post
Rory4 267
I would prefer a dog to be able to be called off, nothing about not wanted it just doing what there told. same with lurchers its saved me alot of trouble a few times being able to call my bitch off mid chase, but the other I have no chance and caused me a few close shaves!
