Hunting Pellets

Afternoon peoples,

 

Has any one used the Thunder Bolt pellets? If so what results have people had?. I have an Ultra so if any one has used them in an Ultra the results would be appreciated ....

Hello Buster,

 

I was told they are ok for pcp's by the guys over at solware?... So they are no good for PCP?... I did think that they are quite big as in length to fit the mag...

after a quick goolge , seems they make em for PCP now aswell . My mistake , i was under the impression that they were only for springers ( as the first lot were ) . They look like Deffiants and Loguns .

there are two weights 10gr for spring guns and 13gr for PCP. Tried them in my HW100Kt 22 but to many flyer's

They are NOT a hunting pellet - regardless of what it says on the box!

 

You are correct, they are EXACTLY the same design as Logun Penetrators, Definats, Exterminators etc - they all come off the same pellet line.

 

Defiants are LEAD and are superb when you can find the right head size for you barrel - BSA, use the 5.52 size in .22. It might take as amny 120 shots before they start to work properly. I used them in my Scorpion and it was 120 shots before the groups even started to reduce.By 200 shots they were creating clover leaf grous at 50 yards - would YOU give them that much of a test before rubbishing them?The most accurate pellets I have ever used. They work in my SLR98 too, again it took over 70 shots before they started to get anything like acceptable. They are still getting better as I fire a few more down the tube. Give it another 5 mags or so and then I will make judgement. They are going as well as Acupell at the moment though, so not bad.

 

Back to Thunderbolts. ZINC, made for range shooting indoors really, where there is no wind and so light pellets being drifted badly doesn't come into it. Lead WIL be prohibited in time. Both Prometheus and H&N make non toxic pellets in readiness (at great cost, 10x the cost of lead pellets to make) for the tieme when lead is outlawed - it won't be outlawed for shooting reasons, it will be outlawed for manufacturing reasons.Employee protection from a leaded environment. Similar to why lead was taken out of petrol - it was a brilliant additive for petrol.

 

Don't even think about using them for hunting - but the lead version, Defiants ARE worth persevering with - but don't shoot 60 or 70 and then say they are rubbish. You need to really give them a good chance to clean your barrel and reline it to suit themselves.My Scorpion was fabulous after about 200 down the barrel. .22 are 14gn (give or take .1gn in 5.52 head size). The head size is critical. 5.51s in that Scorpion went everywhere, no group at all (8" at 40 yards?) yet the change of head size to 5.52 was completely different. Bizarre there is such a difference, but find the right one and you'll be amazed. We should be proud of them, British design, British made and exported in huge numbersto over 30 countries worldwide. If they were completely rubbish, they wouldn't still be selling.

Thank you for a very informative and good read buddy.. I have only been back on the scene for about 5 months now. I have been shooting many years, but like all sports it got a bit much so went off and did other things haha. The lads down at the shop which is local seem ok, but I guess they got this one wrong if you speak so highly and with authority on the other brand mate.

Defiants and Thunderbolts are made by the same firm, PAX in London. Defiants are lead, Thunderbolts are zinc and designed for indoor target use (even though it says hunting pellets on the box - well, would you tell potential customers they aren't right?!!)

 

To be honest, ANY decent dome headed pellet will work the best for hunting.You want a SOFT lead pellet (the defiants are soft lead), so are Acupell, Verminpell are also good and I have found any rifle that shoots Accupell well, will also shoot verminpell, but only to 30 yards. The flat front loses speed faster and they start to lose stability once past 30 yards, maybe 35 at a push, but 40 is beyond stable flight range. For short range stuff, like ratting, ferals in barns or squirrels, the verminpell are a great choice IF THEY WORK IN YOUR RIFLE (try Accupell, if they work the verminpell will). RWS Superdome and Superfield are a good pellet. Air Arms Fields are another excellent pellet that seem to work well in most barrels - H&N Field Target Trophy are too - I use them in my Daystate Huntsman, because they are affordable and group one on top of another at 35 yards.

 

Whichever brand you go for should be determined PURELY BY HOW WELL THEY GROUP IN YOUR GUN. Accuracy is first and foremost, the effectiveness of the pellet is only as good as how reliable it is at hitting the target. Any of those soft lead pellets will have the same, or very similar, terminal effectiveness.NOTHING likes a pellet in the head!

are these thunderBOLT pellets in a small really small cardboard like match box style box ? i recieved some in a gun shop by me which has now closed down the guy behind the counter told me to use them as he uses them in his air arms .177 and the few i did have were absolutly amazin i thourght for summer time shooting of rabbits really hit hard and put alot of rabbits in the bag

I have used them for hunting and when they hit the rabbit goes straight down dead out to 40 yards but like i said before to many flyer's

ill stick with AA field for now and maybe look at the rws instead...
