morton 5,368
Ill be the first to admit, when i was a little younger,if i can remember that far back,i always wanted something better, never being happy with what id trained and entered. It took me a while to realise that the grass was,nt always greener over the other side.I cringe with some of the mistakes i made, the dogs i let go that i would give my right arm for now.I cannot abide youngsters now making the same mistakes i did, double standards definitely, with age comes reason, sometimes its to late for the dog,but the best lessons learnt are usually the harshest and most severe. 5 Quote Link to post
coneykenny 98
im always browsing done deal lookin at lurchers for sale.they are nearly always 12mths old or just older. im very suspicious of their reasons for selling, getting out of dogs ,movin house ect ect. nobody genuienly sells on an excellant dog ,brilliant on the lamp, backs down from nothing. to me its obvious that the dog hasnt met the mark and its time to get rid.now if these owners could be honest and come out and say the dog s too hard or too soft and just not doing what they want but will do most other things, then they might get buyers easier. beast 1,884
I have never passed on a dog either, and I've been running em for over 25 years. i have had dogs which werent great at what they were bred for, but i have tried different stuff for all of them. some even ended up being really good dogs, like the little collie cross i had which was crap on the lamp but turned out to be a great shooting companion, used her just like a spaniel and she was better than some of the spaniels i've seen! i think lots of people just dont want to persevere with their dog. you can find a use for most dogs if you can be bothered to try 1 Quote Link to post

lurcherman01 16
i agree, ive had dogs all my life, lurchers for 40yrs,never once have i got rid of one, once i have one they are with me for there entire life, regardless wether they were crap at lamping as they allways exceeded doing something different, like riohog, shooting, ferreting etc,if i lost all my permission today,my dogs would not be sold on,they would retire at home with me,besides i couldnt bear to think of my dogs with someone else, theres so many dogs sold an passed around, young dogs according to them, done everything, yet in my eyes to young to have been started, these dogs ruined because of idiots that dont know one end of the dog to the other, ive known dogs to have changed hands because there the wrong color, unbeleivable, swopped for a air rifle,etc...it does sadden me seeing this, but it will never stop......thats my rant ,off out with my dogs{my best mates} 3 Quote Link to post

redpat1 225
I passed on my 1st lurcher a couple of weeks ago. The main reasons were the loss of my permission and that my wife had been ill during pregnancy, we were both having a really rough time and after a lot of thought I let her go coming up for her 1st birthday to a great guy off of this site. I will tell you now I will never do it again, after all the work I put in settling her down with the family and hours spent trying to get a bond with her I let the dog down. Its been a few weeks but not an hour goes by when I wish I could turn back the clock. yes, I am still stressed and having a hard time but who isnt at the moment? I made a decision that I have to live with for the time being, I know she is with a top fella having a good life and being bought on to do what she was born for and I am sure she will be an excellent pot filler. So you are right riohog, to many excuses and not enough grit and determination to see things through. I have learnt my lesson the hard way and will try and remeber how I feel at the moment so as not to forget what commitment and hard work means in the future as I am sure life will settle down again soon when the baby is born (any time now) and my wife gets her health back. I will have to start again from scratch with a lurcher and terriers if that is the route I follow and want to continue being involved with hunting, but no more excuses, I will build some proper kennels and make my decisions knowing that it is a lifetime of work and commitment through the rough and smooth times. jarv5116 57
Some people want dogs for a certain type of quarry and thats the only quarry they will hunt. If the dog dont hunt the quarry the guy hunts, do you want the lad to keep 5 dogs in his runs that wont do a job? just a thought not everyone is the same and has working dogs for the same work 1 Quote Link to post
