foresterj 1,096
half cross and her 3/8 5/8 daughter both beardie cross,my personal preference Edited March 31, 2012 by foresterj 1 Quote Link to post
ftm 3,357
I had a Beardie cross years ago. She possesed almost human intelligence, was totally biddable, ridiculously easy to train and a very faithful and lovable dog. She proved herself as a fantastic all-round rabbit dog season after season. We lamped, ferreted, hunted up during the day and she even snatched a few lucky Hares over a short dash. Temperament wise she was totally steady, obedient and very soft but constitutionally as hardy as I can imagine any dog could ever be! She would happily choose to sleep on top of her kennel in mid-winter, even in the snow! had very good feet and a coat so thick and waterproof she didn't look like what most people imagine a lurcher to be. The worst weather would not bother her one bit whilst working and she had endless stamina for her size. The fact she would 'run clever' was, in my view, an attribute and a joy to watch. She would often hunt a rabbit up and rather than run it as you might expect, she would anticipate, almost like a sixth-sense, where it would head for and when she first started doing this I would initially think where the hell is she going, only to be amazed as she stalked up a boundary stone wall, for example, to intercept the rabbit as it turned towards what it thought was safety. She would have been hopeless at simulated coursing I am sure, as once she had seen where the lure ended up a few times she would have ignored the chaos of the 'course' and ran leisurely straight to the end of the machine and waited for the lure to arrive! That is how clever she was. On the lamp she would work out how to run the rabbit in a split second; she would either have a mad dash at it or she would run out of the beam slowly picking her moment as the rabbit picked up pace. She would also give up on runs (only on the lamp) when she knew she couldnt catch it - I have read peoples opinions on this suggesting it is a fault, but why? She would still be working right through to the end of the night whereas some 'guests' dogs that ran hopeless runs would be knackered, limping or both with hours to go. I saw that many, many times! I could easily call her off a run which in a few circumstances over the years was priceless. She wasnt the fastest lurcher, would be laughed out of a show ring but I am sure she accounted for more rabbits than any show winner of the time and indeed most lurchers I have ever known or seen work since. Your were a great dog Tess, RIP.thats the type of dog i kept mate done the job for me but wasnt every ones cuppa- billy Quote Link to post

poacher3161 1,766
I was told the bearded collie was used to work sheep on hills and mountains mostly out of veiw of the sheperd so one of its traits was to be a bit vocal . Quote Link to post

Magpie 102
The Beardie is a very adaptable dog capable of fulfilling a variety of tasks. One of these tasks is to hunt for missing ewes and signal to the shepherd where they are by barking. They also use their voice to encourage stubborn Cattle to move. This is not to be confused with yapping while running. Barking to attract the attention and to encourage beasts to move is completely different from opening up. I would suggest that anyone who has owned a yapping Beardie lurchers has entered the dog to young or unfit. It's the same for any lurcher bred what ever way and especially Collie bred dogs be it Beardie or Border. They are generally a bit more physical than Borders and will dish out swift retribution to any animal foolhardy enough to stand it's ground. The little bitch in the working pics has no fear of any beast and pin and hold Sheep far bigger than her own size. She's a very impressive bitch indeed. She and her sister need little in the way of direction from their owner, they know their job and just get on with it. It's absolutly amazing to watch. One of the down sides to Beardies and Beardie bred lurchers is that they can take a long time to mature mentally. It's nothing for a dog to be well on it's way in to it's third year before they really start to settle into their job. Patients is not something that is very common amongst folk these days, but it's a vital quality required of any would be Beardie lurcher owner. It is vital that you don't do too much too soon with Collie bred dogs. Early failures can and often do sit deep in the psyche and it can be the very devil to build up that confidence again. It's not always possible to put easy game in front of a pup, but it is absolutely vital and I cannot stress this enough that when you do eventually start your dog to ensure as much early success as possible. Try always to end a session on a high if you can. My half cross bitch is very confidence driven. She can be deadly when she's bubbling, but frustrating when lacking in confidence. This is not the case with my other two lurchers however especial my smooth coated bitch who has very high drive. She's not stupid with it though I'm glad to say. My half cross bitch out of 'Hector'. Nice to see Abby again Dave. We've missed you on Colliecurs. 4 Quote Link to post
