mackay 3,400
As the title says, to all the collie enthusiasts out there, which and why. Quote Link to post
darbo 4,776
i can only give a run down of a 1/2 cross beardy i owned for 17 years. he made 25ts rough brindle. training wise he was easy to train but took quite a while to mature. training had to be short sessions or the dog would get bored easy while young. the dog had great feet coat rarely injured. worked with my russel bushing did very well. had a good nose on him and strike.made a decent lamper did not pick and choose his runs which is sometimes leveled at collie crosses. knocked over a good number of daytime hunted up hares. good jumper and retriever but was very hardmouthed from his first rabbit to the last at age 11.a dog who tried his best for me not a world beater but a good honest dog. never owned a 1/2cross border but a 3/4 border greyhound who showed great potential but died at 2.the rest of my dogs were collie lurcher x saluki lurcher because i moved on to mainly running hares.these dogs were only ran on rabbits and hares.the dog was bought in 1989. Stabs 3
Can't comment on the Border side of things but I run some Bearded Collie crosses and they do me fine. Good jackets, feet and plenty of hunt. Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
The problem with asking opinions on a forum is that there will be so many different people who have differing experiences of both Borders and Beardies. There are also many different lines and types in both breeds, and whilst some are very good, others may not be so good. People also have different standards and criteria, and even when talking about something as similar as Border or Beardie, there can often be a huge variation in people's experiences and opinions, depending on the person's own level of expertise. Personally, I would expect any type of working collie cross to have good feet. If it didn't I'd have to question the standard of dogs, both Collie and Greyhound, used in the breeding. There's good and bad in everything. As for yapping Beardies, I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I have friends who work them and I know they wouldn't keep yappers. The one I had many years ago never yapped. I think there's a lot more shite bred these days, of all types, as lurchers have become too popular for their own good. 6 Quote Link to post
leegreen 2,182
Does anyone actually work Beardies any more? All the working collies I know, which is not a great deal, are Borders. 2 Quote Link to post

Yes, there are some people who are totally devoted to Beardie lurchers and wouldn't have anything else. There are some good hard working lines out there, and they're not just rabbit dogs. they're just not the sort of people who come on forums. Though there is a good little forum: Collie Curs. I don't know if it is now a closed forum or not, but its certainly not open to every idiot with a lurcher Quote Link to post
