all year round ferreting??

hi all,

 

just looking for some advise,

 

been gifted a huge golf course permission today,

signed, sealed, delivered,

for rabbit only,

its an all year rounder, but only ferrets!

they want good results almost instantly as there is damage everywhere.

 

would you take this on knowing for well their are hundreds of young and almost certain of a dig in each set?

 

if so,

best prevention , if there are any, of a lay-up?

buy a decent spade! , and locator!

i wouldnt say theres much you can do to prevent lay ups really, make sure the frrts are well fed the night before going?

id set loads of snares up aswell if its that bad

The biggest problem that I find with summer ferretting isn't lay ups, it's finding the holes. The bunnies in the south are breeding all year round, so although it's more likely that you will find young in the summer, I also find them in December and January.

 

When you say 'ferret' only, have you enquired about long netting? Golf courses lend themselves quite well to the odd run out with the webs at night.

I would give em a break for a month or two , keep whole rabbits in your freezer then when you go in the summer take a nice picknick and a load of frozen rabbits and chill out then end of day tanah a load of rabbits ; )

If you are stuck mate, i will give you a hand. There is nowt you can do about the young, just dont take a ferret that kills and sticks. You ARE going to end up digging though, and getting stung to feck, and miss a lot of holes, and so miss rabbits. Worse thing is waiting for ages while they chase down and kill the puff balls, it just takes ages. Best method to get them down quick on a golf course and without bothering anyone, is doing the rounds at night on a golf buggy, with a lamp and high powered air rifle.

hopefully i will be able to call on yourself and malc for some help once they are happy,

altho the club and members want to see results straight away,

ive been told i need to keep it quiet discreet as the women members complain, a lot!!!

 

long netting may be a good call, just to catch any bolters missed by nets!!

You need to consider getting the longnets out at night if it helps keep the owners happy.

 

You will find that in April, May and June the numbers of young will peak. That would be a good time to get out after dark with the webs as an alternative to ferreting.

 

As Ideation suggests, lamping with a decent air rifle will also put lots in the bag, but I'd try and prove yourself as being safe, responsible and reliable before suggesting it.

As far as shooting/lamping is concerned,

I am a steady shot in the style of 177 sub 12fp,

as I already lamp at night on another golf course!

Ferrets are only option on here!!

Feed your ferrets and get out there you still have another month ,six weeks of ferreting left .Then even during the summer you will be surprised how rabbits bolt and the spade doesn't come into play as much as you think .

Do one or two golf courses lamp with the dog when the wind is up.

 

Ferret them when the course is frozen or covered in snow-play is cancelled.

 

Dont use any guns

 

Im pleased with what we have acheived this last two seasons.

 

Should be one or two windy nights yet.

Right, no air rifles.

 

Well then my friend, the only way to do it, is to do it the normal way. Decent marking dog, nets, well fed pug, disco carrot and sharp spade, and just get and do it, if you hit it asap, it wont be too bad with the cover at least. Like i said, if you need a hand, give us a shout.
