unclepesta 101
kinesthesis...smell is not the most important issue theres all sorts of scents in the ground he comes accross he may investigate on his travels but he will still travel his undisturbed run, mess up his run or leave a strange object in the path of travel he will paddle dirt to push it out.a mole moves by using his rear feet he fits his tunnel like a bottle brush when he stops there aint no overun, when he enters your dug out run he feels the difference on his wiskers and the body, imagine being blindfolded in a drainpipe led on the ground you can only use your feet like paddles without bending your legs to push yourself along to the end as you come out the end you feel the release of pressure thats what he senses.his touch senses are memorized cos he is blind, automatic muscular memory which is what kinesthesis is a term for.mess his memorized cylinder up or leave a trap jaw exposed for him to touch you may not catch him,the only thing and last thing he should touch thats different is the trigger...goodnight mole boom!.ps i wrote this without watching video just watched before i pressed post, now this is 100% the issue thats why you didnt get the boom! he has entered a cave! bugger that... cap that off he says.good video well done for posting this and asking the question.do more video study for us all im sure all agree 17 seconds of great learning, with thanks from james. unclepesta 101
Hes thinking that smells just like when I found uncle Franky Dead as a Dodo last week! Good vid though mate its not smell of uncle franky my traps have uncle frankys smell and all his neighbours and even from his great great granfers family,if anything a smell of another mole will attrack him in his own territory think about it.they dont hang out together do they? genrally running the tunnels alone crossing paths ocasionally, moles take no crap from each other only in breeding do they actually pursue in a positive manor like a lot of animals deer fox mink birds, sigmund freud would understand whats im saying.any way smell is down the list in my humble opinion on moles.watch again... like you said good vid.its disturbance watch him move his head closely he aint smelling.he is sensing with wiskers in all those cracks around and above his head, his runs been damaged and hes gettin back and cappin off. unclepesta 101
i totally agree with what your saying dido, exept the diesel bit, setting in the correct place and correct position is vital to good catches , also having your traps tuned makes a world of difference , its a combination of all these things and your traps not smelling of foriegn smells, i also used to catch with un weathered, new traps and would set them in among weathered traps , they caught , but not as well as the weathered traps dnn , i was quite suprised at the statement you made about covering traps , i thought i had read it wrong , but seems you wrote it wrong the only reason a weathered mole trap would work any different is if your allowing him to contact jaws or other trap parts before trigger contact, the first and last part of the trap he touches with exception to duffus is the trigger, if his cylinder walls of run on the sides are damaged or widend thats when he will stop and inspect further with wiskers and snout, so you could improve on your probable good catch to set ratio and prevent what this video shows, notice he caps not pushes dirt and activate trap, how many of your unactivated traps has he capped before being caught in another trap, we genrally only think we have failed when our traps are full of dirt, but its more failure unseen by capping further back,we catch mole lift unactivated traps backfill holes and walk away thinking he did not pass, bit techinal but think about it, unseen capping.and remember trigger is the only part he should touch in a precise set.again just a tought provoking opinion with video.going work now anyway check my traps and see if i got capped lol Quote Link to post
moley 115
i do have a little bit of experience catching moles and am well aware of getting traps possitioned correctly, however i don,t think for a minute that moles stop at ever difference in thier tunnel system,i also know that mole runs are not exactly the same size along thier length, this is due to collapse , soil type etc, i used to set duffus type traps mostly in clean open runs, i would also set talpex type in certain situations and plugged the run before setting the trap, it worked for me and i had a 50% catch rate on most farms, so i must have bin doing something right, i no longer catch moles for a living but still keep my hand in at home and on my bosses lawns Quote Link to post
unclepesta 101
moles are catchable even in a bad set by bad trappers im just making noise to maybe reduce that bad set happening like the video shows thats debate, the mole thought its a cave best cap that and go get uncle frankie even the man who uploaded it knows he provoked mole into thinking mmm something up here, the question is what is he thinking, all good fun,i set traps in the hill itself nowadays is that anygood?,i do it as part of my fulltime job mainly lawns, try molehill setting save the bosses lawn also saves the greenthumb bill too,for all those trying to save the lawn damage try it and kill the myth as well as the mole ha ha,as you just stated disturbance of runs is a part of it but let me tell you it does not go unoticed collapse is a world away from expansion of a run, have a go in the hill setting it precise, and i dont know many mole trappers that do it most walk around with big bar pokin holes cut squares drop the trap in turf and sprinkle and walk away,i think the helps lawn airation and cutting the turf is scarification of some sort the catch boosts moral,im not talking just standard mole trapping theory lets make it a scientific art, did you cap to impove your catch by letting him break throught straight into trap you trickster you how could you do that to a blindman,my comments i hope provoke thought for those intersted not upset my fellow trappers, agricultural i do a little but its mainly lawn care or livestock fields, equine freaks, theme parks suffering insurance claims from holes and hills, stately homes golf courses and stuff, anyone know how to skin a mole on hear good?shame about the pelts being wasted nowadays by most of us.anyone know any purchsers of moleskins apart from fishermen for fly,any tips or alternate views most welcome,i enjoy something old something new, been mole trapping today, anyone caught a albino or punk?or anthing interesting, straight mole snaring thats where im heading lol i got the real mc'coys on it,goodluck all on here and all the best from james.only windin you lot up let to fun begin x.ps please be gentle im new to this computer game. 1 Quote Link to post
