stevethefish 80
After my offer for some ferreting on here, I had a few that wanted to tag along but it was just Vin and Bret that finally turned up for a bash. It was amazing Stevo and the crew turned up 15 minutes early which was unlike them they are usually bang on time. But I got a message from Vin saying they had a hold up and would be 15 minutes late. I was thinking could this have been a mistake as I am a twat for wanting things to go bang as planned. I would give them the benefit of doubt and we sat and had a coffee waiting for them to turn up. About 15 minutes later a van pulled up on my front and it was Vin and Bret, they were very apologetic, but said "we also forgot our spades". That was the least of our problems as we always carry plenty (just in case) so we headed off to one of the farms I do about 15 minutes away. Well this land we were doing today I had never done before so it was a case of take a peek to see what it was about. The first hedgerow we got a couple of marks but something was just not right, you know when you get that feeling. Well it soon came to light as I walked on to get some good marks with tilly, there was evidence of a dig. It was apparent that someone else had already been on here and it left us thinking it could be a waste of time. We did manage a couple from the first set but then decided to move over a couple of fields just in case. We drove round and the first hedge we got to was looking pretty sparse but we did a couple of sets and managed about 5. Stevo walked the dogs on and found that the next row was looking pretty tidy and it wasn't bad to say the least. I helped Vin and Bret net up on the corner set and when we popped the monkeys in we managed 4 but also had 2 slip the nets in the twigs, these we managed to get later so we were lucky there. As we moved on it was amazing, we didn't encounter any young and all the rabbits but a couple were bolting clean, what a refreshing change. I bet our guests were thinking "these lads have it really easy" but I did put them right and offered to take them on some grafting land if they wanted, they said no for some reason. It was all going sweet and as we got to about 11am we had about 39 in the van so decided to get the snap out and have a break. We all had a good chat and got to know each other better these guys were sound and a pleasure to have them tagging along. After our sarnies we decided to move on, we had taken quite a few and wanted to leave plenty for breeding, as you do. We had a good drive around checking all the areas that I was told were problem areas or where carrots were ready to be sown, We didn't find any that were (safe) to do, most were in deep dykes and gullies that would have defo held young uns and possibly be very deep. To this end we decided to have a mooch with the dogs and gun through a small wood hoping to pick up the odd ones. We did have a laugh though, I shot a drey out and the squirrel legged it down the tree and straight into a rabbit hole, well we just had to have it. We banged a ferret down and it was such a commotion but the ferret managed a victory, they can be evil little feckers those tree rats. A bit more driving and then another small set which held a couple of bunnies but also a few young. We let the young go back and then called it a day and got the rabbits out for a catch shot. It was a poor day rabbit wise but we had spent all afternoon checking out the land for the farmer and (did our bit) as you could say. It was a great day never the less and with good company from Vin and Bret and I am sure they would like to tag along again, maybe if we had stayed on that other part of the farm we could have had a picture for them with over 100. On the day we managed just 41 (one in the van) but only in the morning so was not too bad. It's getting very late now though and we were very lucky today with these late breeders but it doesn't very often fall in line so easily. Thanks guys a good day I'm sure we will meet up again next season. Edited March 5, 2012 by stevethefish 1 Quote Link to post
