electric fences

Recommended Posts

We were out ferreting a couple of weeks back, ad a caught myself on the cattle electric fence, and aye it was sore! But the dog dinged himself off it at least twice after rabbits and didnt bat much of an eyelid!

Some cope with it better than others. The sensitive collie types are the worst in my experience but most learn to cope in the end. If I'm ferreting a wall or hedge with wires and they aren't switched off I often pull up the posts and chuck the whole fence up on top (putting it back afterwards of course!)

I live in a dairying area and shock wires are on almost every farm. The worst belt I've had was when coming back from lamping one night. I was carrying a rucksack full of rabbits and my jumper was soaked. I slid the bag under but while crawling after it my wet back brushed the wire. The bang flattened me.

I had a bitch some years ago that was lurcher to lurcher bred but had a fair amount of collie blood, she took a belt off an electric fence after running a rabbit and even though I was a distance away from her, she wouldnt come near me for ages and she point blank refused to ever run a rabbit again. She would just stand and let them run, I was gutted as she was a true allrounder and her retrieve was always bang on the money.

My best bitch would jump them like nothing, she was coming back after having a litter of pups and i took her out to a mates, she got tangled in an electric fence when she was jumping it and it set her back a little bit, but then i took her out again and the same fcking thing happened and she lost so much confidence with electric fences. now she goes under them.

Nothing worse for wrecking a dog.
