right folks my old lurcher has a lump on his arse, at first we thought it was his anal gland that was bloked, after examining him that wasnt the case, so we went to the vets, he said it was an abcess and sent us off home with £50 worth of tablets and come back in 3 days, went back and saw a different vet who said it defo wasnt an abcess but it was an hernia, come back in 3 days and ask for john the hernia specialist, so far im £65 out of pocket and still no wiser, went back and seen john, who said it wasnt an abcess and it wasnt a hernia, it is infact an hematoma, he drained all the fliud out of it and sent us home saying,"give it 3 weeks and it should go down if it doesnt i will put a drain in it, but to be honest i dont want to put a drain in it, but having said that it will have disappeared by then, well 3 weeks later its as big as ever, im taking him tomorrow because im far from happy, all told im £90 out of pocket and still no further on, anybody had this before, all advise welcome, cheers.

What type of fluid did they drain out, was it bloody deep red or watery blood, straw colored or pus??? is the dog showing signs of infection, such as temperature, or pain????

With an abscess of that size one would expect the dog to be systemically unwell.

If it was a haematoma, bleeding into the tissue, then by now it will have started to organize, set, and getting past the draining stage. Once organized the body will absorb it over time.

Think back has there been a bite in the last month or so that has healed over, to then form an abscess inside or has there been some trauma that didn't cause a puncture in the 48 hours prior to the swelling that could cause internal bleeding?

Had a terrier with something very similar..at first the vet thought it was the anal gland's but on closer inspection and a bit of prodding about it turned out to be a ruptured anal wall...and the cavity that was created was filling up with feces..he was also having load's of trouble emptying himself and would yelp and scream while doing so..a quick operation solved the problem which never returned.

when we returned to the vets the 2nd time they stuck a needle in and drained a small amount of clear fliud, at that stage the vet said it aint an abcess cause that wouldve been puss, the 3rd time the vet drained it completely and it was clear with a slight pinky tinge to it,thats when he diagnosed a heamatoma, but he hasnt had any sort of trauma in that area, ive been back in this morning and dropped him off, they were going to make 2 small incisions, drain all the fliud off and flush it out then sew in a drain, im going back at 2.30 to collect him, hopefully i'll find out exactly what it is/was and whether this is the end of the problem(apart from removing the drain at a later date), they also told me to bring £120 with me,as i have to pay right away,so lets hope it is the end of it, cheers

Not having much luck fella, the vets are raking in the cash..

Hope the dog comes good..

In the past I have been unhappy with vets its not a money thing its compentacy thing.. I would sack them off and find a good vet that you have confidence in..
