New Rifle Help!

I have been using spring rifles for years but now want to buy a pcp. the most i am willing to spend is £500. I would like a very accurate rifle (lots of pigeon shooting!) that is capable of taking pests out at long range. any help would be much appreciated

I think for a budget of £500 you are probably best of buying a quality second hand rifle. If it was me in the market for a pcp I wouldn't hesitate to buy an air arms s410 for the money that you want to spend. I absolutely love mine its super accurate and reliable.

 

But I think that the best thing that anyone can do when buying a new rifle is travel around a few gun shops and have a hold of a few that way you can see what you like the feel of best.

I've had an AA S410 and for the money they are hard to beat. Very accurate, reliable and easy to shoot. I recently got shot of mine though as it was a little on the long side and didn't feel right in the shoulder for me.

 

I now have an HW100ks, which fits like a glove, is ultra accurate and great quality. You might be lucky and find one secondhand in your budget.

 

Si's advice of try as many as you can is sound. Would defo do recommend this. I tried loads of rifles before I bought my HW. Tried BSA's, New AA superlights, Theoben, Daystate etc but the HW100ks was the niceest feel for me.

Your aa410 I had of you is a lovely tool but that hw100 is a piece of art saw one in excellent nick yesterday under £500 second hand I also rate the r10 both tidy compact and shoot well out of a motor.

The Ultra is a love hate thing for sure, it's also very short.

The AA S200 is a great rifle but if you can stretch the budget to a get a 410 you won't regret it as the 200 is single shot and the multi shot is very very useful when hunting.

Not sure about the Scorpion as I've never used one, though in general I think they have a fairly good reputation.

We own the HW100T FAC in .177, the HW100KT in .22 and the HW90 FAC in .177.

 

They're all sublimely accurate if you do your part.

 

Having said that - I've yet to hear a bad word said about the s410, and it is about half the price.

 

For my money though, I'd have the Weihrauchs in any case.

s410 is the way forward. Can pick them up for £350->£400. The HW100 usually fetches a lot more. Personally I found the HW100 too heavy and it just didnt suit me as much as the s410.

He's right you know - the HW100 is heavy. That is why I went for the Karbine version. Only downside is the lower shot count per fill. For a hunting trip its never been an issue though.

Lucky enough to have owned all 3.

 

The 200 with the ten shot convertion is a very accurate rifle, definately worth a look.

The Ultra multi, again excellent rifle, appart from the mmc cocking action, but thats just a personal thing, you may like it.

Both these rifles are light, and very capable.

 

The SE is a bit heavier, but is another great rifle straight from the box.

 

Go give them all a cuddle, and see how they feel in the shoulder.

If you are wanting long range accuracy, utter reliability, good shot count and in your budget of £500 - nobody has mentioned a Rapid 7 (or 12) yet. Fantatstic rifle that actually started the whole PCP thing, certainly for multi shot capability. You don't say what calibre you prefer, but the Rapid is available in ALL calibres.

 

I have a custom AAs410, it is supremely accurate, fast to reload, mne is regulated so it gives 120 shots right on the nail, but an unregged version will only yield 60 good shots between 160 and 120 bar pressure. The other thing I don't like about the Air Arms is their slimer barrel that needs a barrel support. They are prne to getting knocked in the field and if the barrel gets a knock your zero goes out.It is only a matter of undoing the grub screws under the barrel band, letting the barrel resume its natural position and then doing them back up again - but f you out for a hunt that is a right bummer! The Rapid is a much heavier barrel that is free floated and so doesn't go off from a slight knock. The Rapid will yield about 180 good shots from the 400cc bottle. Ugly as sin, but the best hunting air rifle ever made - short for ease of handling and pointability, rugged, built like a battleship, simple, cheap and easy to repair (it is only seals) and accurate enough to hit grapes at 50 yards. I have friends who, with their big scopes, are shooting 177 pellets at 50 yards with them! Or golf balls at 100 yards.
