Bloody hell now mediums too.

Firstly let's all agree some of these stories are incredible. But that is precisely WHY you have heard them, the few stories that aren't easy to dismiss out of the millions of one that you can discard in a second. Eventually coincedences do happen, which is a why a medium will use 90% generic patter and let you fill in the gaps. ie 'someone is coming through with the letter...T' 'Well bugger me that must be Tony!' etc and will throw in some very specific stuff to try and get a hit, (he left a shiny object for you to find, silver with writing on it' when it misses they say something like 'remember this, one day you will understand what he meant'.

But with the example of the soldier, most wouldn't want to argue against it because it is obviously a sensitive and private matter. But I think it is disgusting to con a grieving family, so more should speak up. Look at the facts of this though, if a soldier dies you almost have a 50/50 chance he was killed by an explosion or a bullet (a bullet could 'sound like an explosion if it misses, but the person would say 'no it was a bomb', giving more info to work from). You also have a 50/50 chance he was alone or with others, a 50/50 chance they turned left or right (which could be blamed on the point of view). So you can see from a few coin-flip chances and a small amount of info you can easily sound impressive, whilst dismissing misses and making it sound like a hit. The good stories get passed around and exaggerated etc and myth becomes truth to some people.

I see what you're saying but it doesn't come into this case - firstly, quite a high percentage of guys in Iraq and NI died in RTA's.

Secondly, no one would be alone out there, but rarely will there be less than 12 guys on the ground.

Which means he 'guessed' correctly at odds of 12/1.

Third, a lot of IED's are hidden in ditches, streams and the like which wouldn't involve left or right turns. Also most devices are simply buried in the ground along known routes, again, wouldnt involve left or right turns.

So if we assume he was guessing, he guessed there was a corner in the first place, then guessed the direction he was going to turn.

Fourthly, and most importantly, he also managed to guess the name of the injured guy, after gussing there was an injured guy, and guessing his position relative to the deceased. His second name, as that's what he was known as.

And it wasn't 'Smith'.

I do understand it sounds amazing, but if we just take the first example of a 12/1 guess...that isn't bid odds. I mean, if you put a chip on a roulette table at 35-1 and it came in, it doesn't mean you predicted it correctly. If someone claims they can speak to the dead and with random chance it would a 100/1 guess, isn't 100/1 still more likely than the infinitely small chance of everything they say being fact? It would firstly mean there is an afterlife, that can be contacted, the medium can filter through the trillions of people and find the right person (for some reason very vaguely, like a letter...), also that the only thing these people ever want to say is something trivial or reassuring, not 'this is what it is like in the afterlife'. If you just look at everything critically it all falls apart and looks very silly. But I don't think the believers are silly or stupid, they are always vulnerable and desperately want to believe it to be true and often give more information away without realising it. Mediums can be very clever, cunning and fundamentally manipulative and immoral. Others of course genuinely believe their own claims, but then blame the 'client' for the misses saying they are blocking the energy.

I do think people can be free to believe whatever they want, but I don't like seeing people being conned when they are at their most vulnerable. I think it is amongst the most dispicable ways of conning people out of money.

Regarding mediums or psychics. Have a read of this. It was posted on FB yesterday by Derren Brown.

http://psycicornot.wordpress.com/

She wants shooting, how many times has she taken money off a real grieving family.

I was going to add to my last post, Derren Brown is probably the best example of how a medium can work. He is far better at it than 99% of mediums who con for a living and proves they know they are fake.

Ratreeper, as I've said, I can accept that it may have been a load of crap.... But neither you nor anyone will convince me that he guessed the other guys name. Ever. Completely impossible!!!

I wouldn't pay any psychics for anything, as a rule I don't believe in them either and think most are out to take advantage and line their own pockets, and as you say, they couldn't care less how they went about it.

However, as no one can prove beyond reasonable doubt whether this was genuine or not either way, I'll keep an open mind, and I'm sure most others will choose to stick their heads in the sand and refuse to believe that there are perfectly natural things that we simply don't understand at the moment...

Science has the answer it's just a matter of time

If this were 500 years ago, I'd be telling you that the earth wasn't flat

A wee bit of topic but worth mentioning....I'm a sceptic when it comes to this stuff, I've never seen a ghost, or felt a presence or any of that stuff. I went out with a girl many many moons ago and she was f*****g wired strange....she used to talk to me about hearing voices in old buildings and seeing people who had "moved on" all of which I dismissed as bullshit. As I said she was quite highly strung...anyways arranged to meet her one night for a drink and she gets talking about a guy she had spoke to the night before outside a children's home in her area. She tells me this guy knew me and used to lamping with me and out to the pub etc and spoke about some personal shit that only I knew about.

Now the creepy thing was he told her to tell me it was time to come clean about what we had found in his brother's loft. (I wont mention the names of the people involved). She even told the name of the person she had been talking to and described him to a T. Now for the freaky bit....the name and description she gave was that of my best mate who had committed suicide 5yrs prior to this. The thing about the loft related to a large sum of money we had found in an old tin in his brother's loft....we never told anyone about it and his brother was strapped for cash at the time and would have cleared his feet if we had gave it to him.....I must admit it freaked me out and I never went back out with her after that.....but the other thing probably worth mentioning was that the children's home had been closed down for a couple of years and my mate had worked there for a number of years.

Now you can dismiss this as bullshit and fantasy but it freak me out and maybe there is something to this more things in heaven than in earth thing....f*****g getting goose pimples just remembering this shit! :icon_redface: :icon_redface:

Very strange that, these are the things that need more looking into.

I had a similar experience/story -

One of our lads was killed in Afghan (blown up). He walked up to a corner of a compound and got hit there and then, died instantly.

A lad was in front of him a few metres, but as he was round the corner most of the blast missed him, his jaw was smashed and he was KO'd for a good 20 minutes. I will call this guy ''John''.

Now, the parents of the poor bloke who died were obviously informed as soon as, and as is usual the media didn't release his name for a week or so.

They decided to go to a medium - not really believers but as I'm sure we can appreciate, at an emotional time like that we look for any explanation/comfort.

The medium (who they'd never met before, and wasn't in their town), then proceeded to apologise for their son dying, and told them that it was so quick he didn't realise he was dead. He heard an explosion but was still standing, and saw 'John' (and he gave his real name!!!), on the floor, so went to help him.

It was only when he found he couldn't touch him that he realised that he was dead.

Now, if anyone can explain that, I'd love to hear it...

A touching story there mate but i reckon some lucky peace of info the medium managed to pluck out before the meetimg with the family. There was a guy on the tv a few months back trying to prove its all nonsense. He then done a cold reading on someone, basically throwing general facts at the person and asking enough questions so something will fall in favour or they manage to read a body signal. I used to watch that Colin Fry on sky mate and i 100% believed what he was doing. He done a reading for a guy and said he brought through the guys son who had died a few years back at a very young age. Said his name and said he was holding a pair of football boots to show his Dad. Now to say there was a lump in my throat is an understatement and the boy was in tears. I think what i'm saying if these guys are bringing a little happiness to familys then so be it but i dont beleive in it now....especially after hearing theres a 1 million dollar reward in America for anyone who can prove they can do it and its never been done..........

aye but the us police use them from time to time for missing persons cases and suspected murder cases

Me, me mate and a bunch of lasses did one in a small forest when we were daft younguns.. me mate had a fit n all the lasses started screaming saying he was possesed or something pushed him .. all those types of ghost things....... this was like 10+year ago easy and he swears to this day he didnt put it on..

however this is the same mate who would smash his ankle up or something to have people talk about him.. a right attention seeker.. so i dont belive anything at all happened to him..

im a see it to believe it guy so to me its rubbish.. until proven

I HAVE however seen something that freeked me the hell out.. at a, now, ex's house there was always storys of how that house was haunted.. one day there was a cup on the floor of were her kid was.. when her kid went to bed neither of us thought about picking it up.. we just wanted to chill and watch tv... the cup that had been there best part of the night fell over and rolled from the TV towards her, pretty quick as if it had been kicked, a couple minuts after that for some reason her cat wouldnt come out the kitchen and just stared.. usually a pretty friendly cat that wanted to sit on ya leg.... there was foot steps but it could of been next door or one of her kids but she was absoultly shitting her pants and she swore down on her life that she saw a figure in the corner of the room.. i however didnt see the figure.. just the cup... still dont believe though :)

I dont belive in it really, well I think its just a case of not really thinking about it. 3 years ago when I just got with my missus her mum was up visiting, I had heard she was some sort of medium or something and I kinda laughed a bit about it. We was just sat there n she looked at me in a funny way. She then said " Was your mums father a sailor"? I couldnt help it and just burst out laughing, kinda felt a bit shite for laughing at her but it was funny and I answered her, "Na my Granda was a bank robber, thats why I laughed,....Sorry!". She then told me she just asked coz she seen a man standing next to me dressed like a sailor and for some reason she thought it was my mums father but she didnt know why. Well next day at work telling the lads about it we had a right old laugh about it man,....Pure classic! I did ask my mum about my Granda just incase n told her about it n she had a wee giggle about it also. About 6-7 months later I paid a vist to my wee grannys who I didnt ever really know that well! After a good wee chat she started going on about how much I looked like me granda when he was a young man, she went on to pull out a very old photo of him at 16 dressed as a salior but didnt know why he was dressed like that it was just a photo she had of him??

Thats just sick man :bad::laugh: I kinda still think it was aload of pish, but what I did notice is that at the time it happened she did seem a bit freeked out herself. Even more so when I told her about the photo.

I like how you are hoping there might be a small chance that this medium can talk to the dead mate...  But i reckon Ratreeper covered it all pretty bang on. I'll only add why did the medium say the lads first name only? Why if he/she was talking to the dead would the name not come through as "John Smith from 21 Broom Avenue in Blackpool, married to Sheila and have 2 kids called Chloe and David??" I'm sorry mate but its the cold reading that does it. We all give of signs without even knowing it and these mediums prey on that and use it to there advantage.

Theres a woman who does the rounds about here. Cant remember her name but seemingly she comes to your house and you get a group of folk to pay and she gives a personal reading. I've always fancied trying to see if she could tell me anything that i would only know but i'd be worried at the end of the reading i started laughing and told her "what a load of shite!!"..........
