Firearms unit demonstration....what to expect

Recommended Posts

Mark Gilcrest has a video on his youtube page showing you what to expect should some clown report you to the police for using a gun.

Has anyone ever had the armed response called out while shooting? I've never had the experience thank god but I can't help but imagine they aren't quite as calm as you see in this video.

had it happen once whilst lamping with the rimfire on permision, there was a lot more shouting and argy bargy upon initial contact but once the gun was on the ground and they felt more secure about the situation, they were fine, carnt blame them, they have no idea what there dealing with upon inital contact.

I still think there should be a bit of common sense involved. A man in a field hundreds of metres away from anyone else isn't posing a risk with or without a shotgun. I'm not saying they should just stroll over but surely they should react accordingly to the situation.

In that video they aren't pointing their gun at anyone. When it happened to you did they point their weapons at you?

I appreciate they've got a hard job to do but maybe when they receive a call about a 'man with a gun' they could easily ask a few questions about what exactly the man is doing etc. Once a caller starts to reply that the man is in a field, he is surrounded by camouflage netting or has a dog with him it should be fairly clear what is going on. They can then ask more questions especially if the man isn't near a significant number of people...after all psychos tend to gravitate towards their potential victims not wander out in to a field miles away from anyone.

Personally I feel that this is more a show for the public due to the negative press the police always get after real incidents like Cumbria.

I think it would put me off shooting if some pumped up policeman shoved a machine gun in my face whilst screaming like a nutter.

Anyway I was just wondering what people's experiences were.

the problem is as soon as a call is made with a mention of a firearm, an armed response unit is automatically sent, these officers are trained to deal with armed threats. its there lifes on the line when alls said and done, no a gun was not pointed at me and as i said once the gun was on the ground and i posed them no threat the atmosphere changed. i do believe the call centre staff should ask more questions and possibly contact the local beat bobby for that area. having said that its a hard call for them to make aswell as it could be a legit shooter or raoul moat.

After watching 'Coppers' and various other documentaries, I've come to the conclusion that they react the way they do because they are either bored, or they find it so exciting they can't help but scream and shout. Shouting frightens frightened people...

The way they respond half the time is ridiculous, and if you ever come into contact with them, please god drop whatever you're carrying as the chances are you'll be shot if you don't.

I had an experience with armed police before I had my ticket, bunch of unprofessional w*nkers the lot of them and I told them that as well.

They try and 'control' the situation - and they are taught to believe that not letting anyone speak or explain themselves is the way to go about it....

They then proceed to explain the dangers they face on a daily basis, and tell you ''we cant take any chances.''

If you get stopped, drop whatever you're carrying, lie flat on the ground and do as they say.

Then people wonder why I call the police and tell them when I go shooting! Stops that sort of thing! I have had the phone ring whilst I have been shooting as the Police are responding to a sighting of a man with a gun, they check if it is me, if anybody else is round there with a gun, if I can see anybody else, the answer is usually no, unless the pigeon man is down on the farmland next to my permission, if he is I will tell them he is there (he has full permission on the farm next to my permission so it could be him as well). So I avoid being investigated by helicopter, ARVs and dog units!

First two minutes when the guy walked in from a mile away total waste of time . I cant help but think they wont be launching that helicopter when they have there cuts in funding and go down to one main control room .Then why search the guy ?.

Not had it while shooting but did have it when fencing at an Army Barracks. We went through all the procedures for entering the barracks. Then went to the fence which was a boundary one. It was better for me to be on the other side (outside barracks) so instead of logging out i just jumped over using a ladder. Some old biddy saw me and reported us.... :D

Along came a couple of soldiers with guns wondering what we were up too....... :icon_eek: Even though we were fully allowed to be there its still quite intimidating... Luck we had badges or it might have been a little more serious........

This happened to an elderly friend of mine a few years back. He suddenly found himself surrounded by armed police all screaming to put the gun down and get on the floor, He placed his gun down and tried to explain that due to a medical complaint he couldn't physically get on the floor, he was rushed and knocked to the floor and as a result, suffered a fracture of his collar bone. His expensive English side by side was treated like a piece of junk and literally thrown into a police van. He was cuffed and hauled to his feet, despite his complaints about the pain in his shoulder, and then without being given any time to explain, he was bundled off into a van and taken to the station, whereby several hours later he was released without charge, and had to find his own way to the hospital. His gun was given back and the stock required completely restoring which ruined the patina for ever. His crime was to have been seen shooting Pigeons in a small wood where he had permission, miles from any houses and on a farm where he had shot for years. He was dressed in Tweed and had a Spaniel with him. Incidentally the Spaniel was left in the wood, and fortunately remained there until someone was able to return and collect the dog the next morning. He gave up shooting shortly after and his letter of complaint was replied to with a letter containing so much lies you would think it was referring to a separate event entirely.

i have had the ARV response 3 times 1 of which included a helicopter. all times have been ok and easily reconciled as it was obvious i was in the right, best to cooperate in full and try to stay polite. i do now log an open incident and get a number from the police if i am shooting in sesitive areas, as 1 of my places borders a nuclear power station and there police come armed as standard
