A day of digging

Recommended Posts

Just thought id share a great days ferreting I had with Spicer91 on Sunday.

We had picked up 7 new ferrets the day before to add to the 3 that we already had. We were really keen to see how they worked so we headed for a great bit of permission at a private school in the village. Lovely open warrens with loads of rabbits about. I had a great day there already earlier in the season.

The first warren was in an open plantation area. About 15 holes were netted and the ferrets entered. Not long after, a starter bolted straight through the net but the terrier soon got hold of it much to my and his surprise! Little did we know it but this was to be the theme of the day!!! After another good bolt we got a mark on one of the new hobs who had stuck for about 10 mins. We dug down to him, 3ft, to find a good size milky doe. Result.

We moved on to an old rockery and netted up. Thankfully no digs here just a few good bolts. One slipped the net and was chased by the terrier but got away.

After a few more small warrens that didnt hold anything, we netted up a very large warren on th bank of a large lake. I had good success here on the last visit and the dog was marking strong. Netted up and had a bolt almost instantly, followed by another. After a while the box came out and we got a mark on a little jill of mine at 5ft. I had dug to her before only for her to move off once i got close so i was a bit apprehensive to break ground. It was a good job that i did however! Just before i broke through, we had a bolt which the dog held up in the net. The rabbit was soaked and sure enough, my jill came out and she was f***ked. Completely soaked and knackered. I broke through and dropped a strong white hob in. He statrted digging on and it was clear that another rabbit was down there.

He moved on and we got another mark of 5ft about 6ft away from the last hole. We knew that this hob killed and moved on quickly so we dug down straight away as he was marking strong. Another hole, another 5ft later we broke through and dropped the terrier in the draw out the rabbit which,as predicted was dead. We ended up with a tug of war between me and the dog vs the ferret much to out amusement!! Another one in the bag!

It was late in the day now, about 2ish and the temperature was right up when we got another mark on the same hob further down the warren. The mark was on a bank and read 6ft. We did debate waiting for him to show but then decided to give it a go! 6ft later, we were both blowing a bit by then, we dropped through only to find two dead starters!!! Not quite worth the effort but good fun never the less.

Ended up with a bag of 13 but it felt like we should have had a lot more after all that effort. Great fun day and great to see that the new ferrets worked as hard as the current gang. A good day for steves young dog as well, 21 weeks. She didnt attack a ferret or run off which is a result in our book!! Then we headed to the pub for a well earned beer!
