Pedigree Dogs Exposed

Recommended Posts

The KC has done more damage to certain breeds of dogs with their ridicolous breed standards all in the name of fashion than anything else. KC tags and papers only inflate the stupid prices being asked for dogs now.Now we have silly prices for even sillier dogs eg jackapoos, ect. Thank god for the lurcher bred to run and for health. I notice some of the working whippet lads seem very keen to hang onto the KC tag has greed taken over from common sense, in my view the KC should have been disbanded years ago.YIS KIC

When I got my Lab I looked for a KC registered dog. To be honest I thought it was the right thing to do to make sure I got a good healthy dog.

Edited to say...Is this just the show dogs that are affected by these problems or are the working strains as bad? I imagine field spaniels and labs are bread for their abilities rather than their looks so wouldn't this mean it was less likely to have problems?

Any dog that has been bred for anything other than its ability to do a job is going to end up with health problems in the end. As soon as you want a darker coat, blue eyes etc it is just a slippery slope to a breed standard where looks become the bottom line.

People just don't have jobs for their dogs anymore, what possible task does the typical pet need to be bred for? So why not breed to look pretty? Or this is the mindset I think these ignorant breeders have. But to play devil's advocate, most pet owners are better off with an inbred pedigree because they just couldn't handle the energy and drive of a proper working dog imo. If you lock a proper terrier or pointer etc in a house all day like they do with their poor pets they would strip the wallpaper out of boredom.

So I am not against 'pet breeds' but why not breed for a chilled out, low energy and trustworthy temperament instead? Or, the opposite of what is happening with the snappy little lapdogs, I wouldn't ever let a child near them.

The Kc don't set the breed standards the breed clubs do, all the Kc is, is a record of a pedigree dogs lineage which in a lot of cases is a total fabrication anyway.

I love all this talk of the Kc ruining dogs, they don't breed dogs, they set no standards.

Every year, every week of the shooting season I sit in a beaters trailer and stand at pegs beside Kc registered labs, cockers, springers amongst others that are fit for purpose.

I'm not a fan of the Kc, but look to the breeders and breed clubs that reproduce some of these canine monstrocities.

You mean like the powers that be prevent me from coursing hares??.

A slippery slope mate, I don't understand the pleasure people get from prancing around a ring with a dog, but then there's more people don't understand the pleasure a man gets from hunting.

I look at dogs (most breeds actually) and even if they're not deformities in my eyes I still think, what in the name of Christ are they good for??.

The Kc has no control over who breeds what, responsibility ultimately lies with the breeder.

I can never understand people lamenting how any working breed is in danger of becoming extinct, there are forty thousand members on here alone, if we cannot in ourselves keep working lines going, just what is it that the KC could do that we couldn't.

I'd also add, what effect has a quasi bred pug or pekinese got on any other breed than their own?.

Its about competition in my eyes. Just as you get people showing of the biggest carrot when it taste like crap you get people showing off mutated dogs that cant even run.

To solve it you need to change the competition and they should do it by introducing a "trail" to every breed. It should be able to do what its breed was intended for. Have it in the retrieving world why not for every breed. Just talking off the top of my head now but you could have some kind strength or bite work for the bull breeds as you cant use them for what they were bread for. The mastiff types should be able to "protect" something i dont know. Every breed had a purpose originally and this should be mimicked in each breed "trail". How can a bulldog be a bulldog if it cant hang of a bite bag for a few mins without creaming in.

I watched the repeat of this Programme yesterday morning, I have never pertained much interest in the British Bulldog and was infuriated by the breeder whose said

"It would be devestating for usif the standard was changed"

What enjoyment can be drawn from owning dogs that health problems basically dominate its life...The footage of the caeserian birth was shocking to me as I cant understand how people can justify breeding a dog, thats entrance into the world alone is such a drama.....The vet at the end who said that the best thing that can happen to the bulldog and the pug is for themto become extinct was the only common sense thing in the programme....

Was glad it was shown though as it showed again the gulf of interest between DOGMEN and those who show and breed them...And sadly, THat gulf will always be measured by money
