KittleRox 2,147
Now thats my hunting bunny season over I,,ve started to become more interested in foraging for plants, mushrooms etc but I,m also wondering if its worth the hassle, I suppose it wouldn,t do any harm seeing as I walk the dogs in the countryside everyday so any recommendations of books to read, stuff to google apprecied, cheers

David K 172
Not too much in the way of edible shrooms around at the moment but an easy starter for you would be wild garlic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramsons. You usually smell them before you see them, they are likely to be growing in damp woody areas with the bluebells. Leaves are a great mild garlic addition to cooking and are used raw in salads. I will be tapping the birch trees soon for the sap which i use to make wine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birch_syrup I would reccomend richard mabey's book as well, lots of edible plants in there but get a more comprehensive mushroom book. That birch sounds interesting, a few aboot here, not sure about mushrooms though, I mind watching that Jimmys farm on the tele and he ate mushrooms he had identified as edible from a book, ended up in A + E lol

trappa 518
Foraging is great fun! I love it. Mushrooms are good as you can get a bumper harvest but be careful obviously. It wont be that long until wild garlic is about, thats always worth a good carrier bag full. Dont forget about brambles and wild fruit too! Are you near the sea? there literally loads to be foraged on the seashore! A word of warning though, acorn coffee is fecking rank. Trust me on this and dont bother!
