Hammer guns

Recommended Posts

I was in a local Gun shop the other day and had a bit crack with two lads who were in with a hammer gun. Very interesting chat ensued and now i have a bit of an interest in using a hammer side by side on the shoot next year just for somthing a bit different. Not wanting to pay a fortune probably about £500 and i wondered does anyone use one regularly?

When i say use it on the shoot its a walk one shoot one so its not going to be used for 1000s of shots at high pheasents! any further than 40 yards i cant see the buggers anyway :D

I have two Hammer guns that I use now and again. Both 12's and they tend to only come out around either Christmas or the end of the season.

I tend to shoot much the same walk and shoot but they are slower to reload if you have a steady flush of birds.

They are good fun to shoot in my opinion, as you say something different and for me, the feel of cocking the hammers, pulling on a bird, the visible thwack on the firing pin followed by a shot is just an all round good experience.

I also tend to confuse quite a few of my fellow guns by shooting Black Powder in the hammers so first shot of the day normally produces a few looks....

£500 should find you a Hammer. Just go for something where the barrels are in good order.
