Ferreting new permission part 2

Recommended Posts

Met up with IKSOPENER along with BODGERBEAR,we was going to the place we went yesterday to do a disused railway bank at the side of a orchard. As we drove into the orchard a few rabbits could be seen running in,so we got to work IKSOPENER AND BB setting longnets while i set pursenets along the bank, the bank was about 200yds long and holes all the way along the length of it,so nets down and ferrets in the ferrets worked along the bank, the first few holes where just deadends and one holers,so we moved along a bit the ferrets went down and stayed down suddenly rabbits where bolting all over the place some into pursenets some in the longnet and some running along the bank and getting back netted. So after sorting things out we picked the ferrets up and went for a brew to let the holes settle a bit as we had been running all over the bank chasing rabbits  .So quick brew onto the next section, ferrets in and waited suddenly 2 rabbits bolted next to BB he was in a flap then another rabbit bolted in a net near him,he was in a bigger flap now :boogy::laugh: but he sorted it :D then the rabbits started bolting again into the purse nets and long nets :boogy: .It went quite for a bit so we got the ferret locators out IKSOPENER got a mark at the top of the bank at 5ft :D he got down to 1 foot and the rabbit bolted  so onto the next warren only a small one this time 7 holes so we put one ferret in and waited,15 mins and nothing then WHAM a rabbit hits the net ferret followed rabbit out quick turnround and back down it shot suddenly double bolt, another bolts from unnetted hole and legs it down the bank with me and IKSOPENER in hot pursuit it ran the full length of the bank and got bank netted in a hole where we first started  back at the warren BB had reset nets and was taking a rabbit out of a net when we came back.By this time it was getting rather warm very warm in fact for the time of year so we called it a day with the ferrets, and had a work round the rest of the land to see what was about, found a few nice spots for next time so all in all a cracking day :toast: .

A few pics.

Ive given up longnets along the hedges I find 25 yeard hemps across the hedge more effective now even if a pain to setup.

Very few bolt for the open on our permisssions and the odd one is dogged .

As Jai if it works for you crack on just wondered.

Same, don't use long nets, our land doesnt suit it, but a stop net is handy for cutting off a gully or running through a hedge

IO - I would have imagine they would have run a long the long net rather than into it?

Yes I just look at that setup and without knowing the ground its clear a fair size warren so there not going to dash for a main warren aross the way .

So I would say all they do is hole hop or run as you say along the inside of the net.

When I first started longnetting and ferretting I had this great image of longnet along hedge and coneys all do as they are told and bolting for the longnet errrrrr NO run along inside it to next bury .

So a change of plan and we now only net outside holes short gate.longnets and dog account for 00% kill rate most days without the hassle of purse netting ever hole.

As the old man is clearly getting to age where its not practical for him to climb in and out of hedges .

We was meant to have ayoung lad with us today 7 Am and no show its going to be hard work to find a replacement dad in ferretting terms who got the time and comitment to be out 4 days a week.

See i'm a pursenetter. I love laying purse nets, and could lay them all day. Also if left to my own devices, i can lay them rapidly, and well. I like seeing a rabbit bouncing about in a net, and like the excitment of dashing here and there, foot in hole, new net on, rabbit out, net sorted and round neck, over and again.

Also if i used long nets, i would probably spend more time untangling the bloody dogs, than rabbits haha. And our land just doesnt work with them, as we rarely do hedge rows, and there tends to be a lot of ground cover.

On our home ground, and where we have been working just me and johnnyboy, out of the hundreds we have bolted, we have lost i would say less than ten, maybe as low as five all season. A combination of pursenets, dogs, and knowing the ground.

I know what you mean about hard finding a partner. I always went with the old man, and then when he stopped, it was a nightmare really. Luckily i stumbled upon johnnyboy on here a couple of years ago, and thats been us every week, usually a couple of times or more

A decent ferreting partner who is 'in tune' with you, is worth their weight in gold.
