Francentey-FTB 29
listen mate, I run my springers as hunting dogs, we do alot of mooching and i like to see them work, one barks and the other doesnt, but there is a noticeable difference in their training, one was over exposed, was given free reign. the other was brought on as a proper gundog and does very well at the job, it now has been brought into our mooches pack due to quality of nose and obedience.... tell me which one barks! its the springer over exposed, given free reign she is one almighty "hunting" dog, i believe you will struggle to find better for hunting out and out alone, in my experience a springer is a wonderful tool and a joy to own, i think bringing it on from a pup with alot hunting, and even over matching will bringing on the yap, Just get a pup out of "hard hunting parents" you will not be disappointed... make sure parents are hard hunters though as alot of springers aren't nowadays. 3 Quote Link to post

Got to agree with you here. there is such a thing as over training springers and i believe that the more you work with them the more drive you take out of them. Don't get me wrong though, you need a dog out rough shooting that your not roaring and chasing after all day and you cant enjoy yourself. Im guilty of doing a little bit too much with a springer myself and i ended up having to give her away. I now believe you should let them hunt on and get a taste for it before you start to train them. and for rough shooting the return whistle, the stop whistle, the retrieve and not being gun shy is plenty for them. and also don't let them past 30 yards, but give them that much reign.
