wirral countryman 2,110
I would not last 2 minutes on my permission if my dogs were allowed to kill cats,I break them to cats the same as with all farm livestock, when I'm working haystacks and barns, etc there are always farm cats everywhere and the farmers look upon them as pets,I'm not saying we have'nt had accidents down the years but I make every effort not to kill them if possible,it is your responsibility to control your dogs and if it can be proved that the cat had an owner you would be prosecuted in england as my 2 mates were 20yrs ago,"dogs chase cats" is no defence in court as they found out,WM 2 Quote Link to post

wirral countryman 2,110
BBB,I had my share of doing stuff I should'nt in the past and once on the scent I like most cannot call them off especially if they have them on for a hat, feral cats living on rabbits are a pain on your permission and I do shoot them if asked by the landowner but given the choice or if I know the farm cats are living in a particular barn I will avoid it or keep the dogs in control, prevention by a bit of thought is better than an argument with an angry owner over a dead cat,my dogs are encouraged to hunt the right quarry and see no mileage in cat killing for fun or to impress my mates as young lads do thinking it will make their dog hard or a better fox dog,I've seen dogs that kill cats jib on fox and bigger stuff in the past and so do not see it as a badge for courage or in any way a true test for a dog, actively promoting it on an open forum will only speed up our already eroding rights to hunt legal quarry,if we all at least try to hunt within our fragile legal framework we may get a few more years without the grey area's left being closed by people deliberately hunting anything they think is fair game, putting an irish flag next to your avatar will not stop the laws from being implemented by an already overzealous RSPCA or police force,I work within the law at all times (barring accidents) and hope that one day we will get back some of our sport that Tony Blair banned just to appease the trade unions with no knowledge of the countryside, cruelty allegations and irresponsible acts will only hurry our own demise and ban hunting altogether,it is sad that most on this thread have chose to endorse this lads post and made us all look the poorer for it,The mods should of pulled this immediately in my opinion, think before you post,WM 1 Quote Link to post

deck 35
theoretically dogs should be broke to cats but if your dogs do not have contact with them regularly because you dont own one or whatever then its hard to do. Quote Link to post
R. Docks 154
If a dog can be broken to livestock, why is it so difficult to believe that it can be broken to cats? All this macho stuff about killing cats is very damaging, and irresponsible. Cats are classified as property in England, and as such, anyone who kills a cat would be guilty of theft and/or criminal damage. Quote Link to post
Big bald beautiful 1,231
broke my old dog to my mothers cat, he was ok with it, watched its every move but never tried for it. then a cat broke cover while mooching about and he killed it. he was ok on a lead around them and wouldnt try until they ran, i wouldnt have trusted him with farm cats Quote Link to post
