bit of advice regarding joe public..

Recommended Posts

I've got a caravan park to ferret on friday. The guy rang my dad and asked if we could go up cos' hes going out of his mind and needs it clearing up before he gets busy over easter n' stuff.. Ive got 5 permissions and only one has other people on it but those are horse riders or a terrier breeder so neither give us a hard time when we are shooting or ferreting (obviously we stop shooting until they are out of the way).. infact the terrier bloke gets the odd rabbit off us and the horse ladies obviously thank us as it could break the horses leg etc... the odd dog walker gets on one of the farms but we just put them right if they say anything since there not supposed to be there... they are easy people to handle..

what im worried about is if theres a few people on this caravan park and give us a hard time.. even though the owner has asked us to come in.. what could we say to not start any problems? obviously "[owners name] has asked us to clear some rabbits ready for the coming caravan season" but you do get some people who just wont be as understanding and if this caravan site is as busy with rabbits as he says.. i dont want to loose it.. and whos the owner going to pick.. the guy who gives him money every year or the lads getting rid of rabbits looking a bit rough.

what would you do in this scenario?

thanks :)

I clear a few caravan parks of the bunnies but the owner only lets us do it during the off season ie december to start of march when there is no-one on site.....If the owner of your permission has let you work your ferrets there whilst there are folk on the site i would sugguest you direct joe public to the land owner if they feel your pressence is unwanted...you could however explain about the mess the rabbits are making of owners land and your just doing a bit of pest reduction..all the best with this mate

Do they have a problem with the rabbits getting killed or just the actual shooting. I suppose if someone is on a holiday they don't want someone walking about with a gun if there kids are running about.??

If I was you I'd stick to ferreting to nets at these places. If not just tell the holiday makers that someone had been attacked by a mad rabid rabbit and they need to go...... Lol

lol mad rabbit!..

the owner said there is a few people there but not many but he said he also has a few people coming to look around.. he DID say hes going to show us where there shouldnt be anyone but still, people will go for walks n what not... I dont think we will come across any trouble, im just wondering the best way to handle busy bodies since as i say.. gotta be a bit more polite this time :p

im quit excited.. ive got 4 big farms but this should be a good day!

You've answered your own question mate. It's easy to loose the rag and tell someone to f**k off mate but in reality all you need to do is be polite and tell them you are doing a service for the landowner.

If you get anyone being threatening or abusive take out your phone out and get the police.

If you start arguing with a customer of the caravan park it will only end up with you loosing permission.

Then when you see them on a night out in town rap the nutt on them.... Lol

Tell them "the park down the road left the rabbits alone and now caravans have started to sink into the burrows, the owner of this site would like to make sure his tenants vans are safe from any such incident because he is such a top bloke", you could always finish off by asking if they "want one for the pot"

On farm land my approach is to tell them politely what I am doing and why and then if they get funny about it simply to f**k off and report me to whoever the wish to. It's never gone further than that. If I'm in a funny mood I may go with the odd wind up.

In your situation I would do the same but direct them to the land owner/park authority very politely, even go so far as having his number to hand so you can phone him and hand the phone to the unhappy individual. I have done this before and it resolved the situation. If you find your self in the publics eye then act like a professional and put despatched rabbits out of sight asap.

The best way to approach this is clearly with professionalism. Just use ferrets and nets, no dogs or guns. Put some signs up with the wording "PEST CONTROL" and where hi viz vests, this way pest control is more accepted than hunting. I know its not ideal but its a good face you are putting on.

We do a lot of public sensitive national trust places with ferrets and lamps most of the public are fine once you have explained the need to reduce the rabbit numbers but you do get the odd wa*ker that keeps on

In this case just bite your lip and keep calm tell em to have a word with the owner/landmanager etc if they are not happy and they will explain it further what ever happens keep your cool if approached by an idiot because that's what they want you to loose your rag and then they can report you for threatening them and it could end up being permission lost because of some wa*ker

this would be my answer i would smile the whole time be confedent when i said it to them and then offer them a hold of one of the ferts people who dont ferret or keep them norm think they just bite and will decline your offer and leave rather quickly

Be very very very very polite and respectful, dress reletivly smartly, and use your brain, i.e if there i an obvious family sitting out, dont be killing right next to them. And if someone approaches you, explain yourself simply, but DO NOT enter into any kind of argument etc, just ask them to please address their concerns to the owner. If you are smart though, most folk won't really know what you are doing. Done plenty of public ferreting, and you just have to hope you dont get a screamer as someone walks by.
