jimmy 76
Ive been considering getting another running dog for mooching and lamping rabbits since I lost my Saluki/Whippet/Greyhound last year. I've been looking at Collie/Whippet/Greyhound, Saluki/Whippet/Greyhound and crosses of the 2. My missus really wants a blue whippet, which if I can get one from working lines - I aren't against. How do people rate the straight whippets for mooching and the odd nights lamping picking up bunnies? And are there many decent working bred lines about? How much can I expect to pay for a blue pup? Thanks Gaz Have a look on workingwhippetforum as there is a good working bitch just been lined with a good working dog both blue. I saw some well bred working whippets advertised at carlisle last week i think they were £150 which is cheap. i got one of these guy sold me it for £125 well breed pup great condition Quote Link to post

hedz31 1,308
Would rather have a purpose bred lurcher anyday if you have had purpose bred lurcher's or running dog's in the past ie saluki/whippet/greyhound you will be dissapointed in a whippet and will soon see there short coming's i think, ive seen a few decent 1s but they were only decent for what they were and never seen 1 hold a patch to a good lurcher but each to there own Quote Link to post
birddog 1,354
whippets can be cracking wee dogs and i've seen loads over the years i'd be proud to own but imo be fussy about what you get from what line, breeder etc. kc registered whippets have been bred for too long for rose shaped ears, tail carriage etc no doubt there are some breeders trying to amend this but they are few and far between. non peds / hardbloods while again in my opinion a faster stronger animal that have been bred for only really one purpose, ie to race in a straight line essentially (apologies to bend racers) breeding the fastest to the fastest these too can have their faults some lines don't have the best feet in the world but again i know some owners / breeders that have recognised this and again are taking this into consideration when breeding. its going to be your time, money and energy......caveat emptor my friend Quote Link to post

bryanm45 787
Just purchased my second whipp only three weeks old at the mo gonna work her with the ferrets and race, lure course the summer lot of sport to be had with these dogs Regards Bryan. Surely you mean 3 monthes old? Just a guess but i would think he means he has bought it and not picked it up yet. Yes, that sounds possible never thought of that Yes sorry I have just chosen her at 3weeks old and pick her up in another 5 weeks she will be a year old for next seasons lure coursing which starts in march, but old enough to come out and watch my other on the bunnys in winter. Regards Bryan. Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
I'll always say get a purpose bred lurcher but I'm a lurcher man, whippets great little dogs in the right places just not my places. Get what you want you'll be the one feeding it. Quote Link to post

bryson 562
i agree with you the whip couldnt go out night after night on ridiculas amounts of runs but for a few nights a week imo the whippet is a very good choice but also on the other hand you can get a small lurcher that will do the same job Quote Link to post
