Chunk and Ben 7
Hi all, ive just applied for my variation on my fac for a 243, and not sure what rifle and scope to go for. I will have a budget of around £1000 . some say spend more on the scope than the rifle but would appreciate any views you have. It will be used for deer stalking and a bit of foxing. Ive been out stalking on a couple of estates over the past 12 months and have managed 5 roe as yet but always used the estate rifle and feel its time to get my own. So can i get kitted out for this budget, new or second hand and if so what make and model for both rifle and scope?? also whats the going rate for stalking, i paid £60 for the stalker and £40 for the cull, (it was cull stalking) is this about right. As much info as poss would be very gratefully received Many thanks Chunk Quote Link to post
Caprelous 217
Hi Chunk With a £1000 budget there are loads of second hand combinations available. Personally I would choose an older rifle combination in any case as the build quality isnt as good as it used to be on rifles made 30 years ago. If you know what you are looking for there are out there with little use. A friend of mine purchased 2 years ago a superb Krico stutzen with a khales variable scope on top with swing off apel mounts in 270 calbre in nearly unused condition for £680 what a bargain , it shoots sweet as a nut, there are older Tikka rifles out there like the M55s etc with little use most certainly better than their modern counter part today that have so much plastic and alloy shrouds and finger guards on them. Look out for the Old 1st generation german optics like Pecar , Khales. some Zeiss they may be old but with them being steel tubed dont suffer from dinks like the more modern allow tube variations go. Try to keep of the smaller calibres such as 223 222 and 22-250s as if used with standard factory loads at their highest performance pressures can be barrel burners especially at the throat and probably need re barreling. I suggest if you scour the gun dealers and on line like yorkshire Guns etc and the like they may have something decent on the racks or Gun Trader etc. When you have found one ask someone with a bit of knowledge to have a quick look at it for you you could save yourself a few bob in the long run. DKGPestControl 22
I have just brought the Tikka T3 Laminated Stanless .243, Wildcat Sound Mod, Mounts and the upgraded Carl Zeiss Scope! Which added £375 but still only came to around £1,750.00. May farther has the T3 Hunter and same set up. bloody great bit of kit! If you can just push the budget a little the T3 Hunter with Sound Mod and Redfield scope is around £1,200 I have also herd good reviews about the new browning x bolt but I have no experience with them!
