FastDogz 155 Posted April 27, 2007 Report Share Posted April 27, 2007 (edited) GRRRR Just back from a walk with my Greyhound a cat shot past and he was lunging/straining on the leash to get to it..Unfortuantly he cannot chase anything due to a reoccuring lameness from the hip ligament/tendons from the track - he is lame even after a pleasure run on the beach He is 6 years old and this is so frustrating for him and me - he so badley wants to work again even if he dosnt get a catch (although when he does get a run he is still very fast - but comes back limping) I so badley want to take him to my old "bunny filled field" that my friends owns back in yorkshire and let him have a go - but is it worth it?? I know it isnt...but..oh i dont know! The dog is preciouse to me and he is my heart and soul and i would hate to do anything to cause him pain ..but also seeing him not been able to do what he so badley loves is also saddening Catch 22 Edited to say how many times can i say "so badley" tonight??? FastDogz 155 Posted April 27, 2007 Author Report Share Posted April 27, 2007 BOB i didnt get the dog so i could run him!I got him to give him a loving stable home and have had him since he retired from the track 2 years ago! So no he will not under any circumstances be put to sleep! - I am not bothered if i cannot hunt ..i was just considering letting him have a bit of fun - what a stupid thing to say! All i asked is "is it worth it?" - NOT running him into the ground letting HIM do as he pleases!!! I cudnt give 2 flying fucks if i never run a f*****g dog in my life ...I meant for HIS enjoyment! I dont wanna RUN him..like i say cudnt care less either way for me i just feel tight sometimes for him because he cant. (and he wants to - do you get me?).. Please belive me i have my dogs best welfare at heart - always have always will hence never doing anything with him since i got him. And er no it isnt a wind up and yes i am for real (most of the time ) Nah think you just got my intentions wrong - no worrys I just didnt like the "put him to sleep" part thats all. Bob, fastdogz has an ex-track grey, she doesn't want to work him, but all dogs like to stretch their legs every once in a while, even if the only thing to chase is their tail. she's just wondering if she should let him, or if it's not worth the potential risk of doing him in. working dog-related stuff goes under "running dogs & hounds". if we're just talking about our pets, we tend to post here. so we don't clog up the working forums. just for future reference mate. skycat 6,173 Posted April 28, 2007 Report Share Posted April 28, 2007 Fastdogz: do you know WHY he is lame? It might be worth taking him to a greyhound osteopath or running dog vet. If you know the cause of the lameness and whether it is joint (arthritis), muscular, tendon or whatever, then might you consider putting him on metacalm (pain killer), so you can let him have a little run, as long as that wouldn't make things a whole lot worse. Mmmm.......I'm not explaining myself very well! Is it the result of an old injury? My old lurcher was put on Metacalm for the last two years of her life as she was so arthritic, and it gave her a new lease of life for her remaining years. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Do you have one of those Doggy hydro pools anywhere near you? I know it sounds a bit poncy, but if your dog does not mind water this can really help! It's not a miracle cure, but it's a way of excercising without putting any strain on the joint's or muscles......and in the process can strengthen them. It's never going to cure him back to his old running days, but may help so he will be able to have a bound along the beach or chace that bit of toast!!! Guest Lurcherbitch Posted April 28, 2007 Report Share Posted April 28, 2007 A lot of the greyhounds I get in limp after a run, they jar the leg or touch on an old injury. It is best to find out as skycat says, What the injury was/is. A friend of mines dog jumped out a first story window, damaged both front legs, but is now running like the wind after a whole lot a rest treatment and matacalm. Best to be safe. Good luck.
