stroller 341
ive never trained the forced retrieve, i wouldnt know how i dont like the sound of it. I know how i feel if the management at work are being forceful so to come home to a nervous little dog and force her to retrieve. I would really have to have knowledge i havent got cos it would destroy her mentally. Maybe it works on dogs with stronger mental states? i just like the play method its worked for me in the past and it will work again. 1 Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Comes back to the reward thing: if you can get the dog to think that bringing you the rabbit, or whatever, is a huge reward in itself (careful conditioning by the handler will have fixed this idea in its head through correct training and at the risk of droning on about tug training yet again, this method really does work, or has done for me with several different types of lurcher and terrier) then you'll get a retrieve. Also depends on the individual dog's temperament and confidence as to whether or not it will hang on to the rabbit and keep other dogs away as it brings you its catch. Don't expect an unconfident or low status dog to manage a retrieve if other more dominant dogs are around. I have had several dogs which couldn't and wouldn't hang on to their catch in a pack situation, but who always retrieved perfectly when worked on their own. Quote Link to post

With Bryn my 1x collie grey, he is good retriever but you up set him, never mind bring back a rabbit, he wont feckin catch one for you..! no way could make alot of lurchers to retrieve if they (dont want to .)
