A Little Mooch

Recommended Posts

I met the farmer at 2pm yesterday. I had already planned earlier in the day what time we would meet, and he had said that he would show me some new land up on the fells. After greeting him, I hopped on the back of his quad and we were off. On the way up to the land, he stopped by an open warren of about 20 holes that he wished for me to ferret at some time. We carried on up onto the tops and he pointed out where abouts he wished for me to ferret. Rabbits scattered everywhere, not many going to ground but a few obliged and dived into their subterranean lairs. I got off the quad, and grabbed my box, spade and bag of purse nets. The field that lay infront of me was mostly reed beds and a few sections of long grass, cutting through all of this were gullies that had multiple warrens stuck to their sides. After walking around it became evident that there would be a few days rabbiting here before the season comes to a close. The rabbits seemed very reluctant to go to ground, most simply running out of sight when I approached them.

When I had arrived at this field, I had seen 2 rabbits enter a warren on the side of one of the gullies. This was to be the set of holes that I ferreted first. It turned out to be 2 different warrens. I layed purse nets on the first half and entered the only ferret I had brought, my polecat jill 'Nutjob'. She worked this half but no bunnies were home. The nets were lifted off here and placed on the next half of the warren. Again Nutjob was entered. After what felt like 10 minutes, a big buck rabbit hit the net that the jill was entered under. She appeared at the hole, and immediately went back down. Another 15 minutes went by so I had a scan with the locator. As I was doing this, the second rabbit hit a net at speed, seconds later it was layed next to its partner. Nutjob told me that there was nothing else home, so I packed up.

Minutes later my lift had rung telling me that they were going to pick me up in 10, so no more ferreting today.

I hope to hit this place hard next week as the farmer wants rid.
