Fenn cage

Would an upside down shopping basket with a couple of rat sized holes in be legal to place over a fenn trap on my local farms slurry pit bank?

Would be perfectly legal and safe to use providing it prevented non-target species getting trapped. I was fortunate several years back when i picked up some half-moon shaped wire garden cloches about eight feet in length which i cut to eighteen inch sections which were ideal for covering fenns......better in a way than wooden box tunnels because you could see instantly if you had a catch without disturbing the setting and also they can be pinned to the ground using a metal T bar.

There's more to using a cubby than just protecting non target species....the cubby can guide the animal in to the trap and help to ensure a clean kill. The fenn was designed to be used in a cubby or hole of a particular size to improve it's efficiency. So for me you'd be within keeping of the law but there wouldn't be any other benefits.

I agree entirely that there is more to using cubby than to protect from non-target species...but the original question merely asked if it would be legal. As with all trapping the skill of the trapper to adapt and modify any setting to ensure a clean and humane kill should always be of paramount importance....!

Thanks everyone. I have set it today and cut the holes on one side at opposite ends and positioned it so that there is a route through it and not just an open space with a trap in the middle. The farmer already has a contractor that lays poison but the slurry area is left alone so there should be plenty there. The bank is lethal though and I wouldn't fancy a dip in it to be honest
