2.8 guy 403
i would think twice on breeding a maiden bitch too late, i bred my cattle dog x at 7 or so and she didnt realy look after the pups that well, it could of just been my old bitch, but ive not had it before she didnt seem to care for her pups as if there was no maternal instinct there Quote Link to post
gameover 1
i would think twice on breeding a maiden bitch too late, i bred my cattle dog x at 7 or so and she didnt realy look after the pups that well, it could of just been my old bitch, but ive not had it before she didnt seem to care for her pups as if there was no maternal instinct there iv'e bred from a 2 year old bitch that wouldnt even lick the chord and sack off never mind feed them, had to bottle feed goats milk till there eyes opend and were mobile enough to get to a plate of milk then onto scrambled egg, the same bitch cost me a bomb at the vets(friday night out of houres) she desided to stop pushing on the last 2, managed to get my hand up and get one but was dead, the sack must have bust inside her, couldnt get the last one out so off to vets, took him over a half hour to get the one and only boy out the litter out and he was dead, the reason for the breeding in the first place was for a dog, ended up with 5 bitches that needed bottle fed and a c**t of a vet bill, and no dog, o and she was in labour from 11:30am till just after 1am not to put the op off, you can get lucky and have an easy litter, just food for thought. RubyTex 1,957
Hell of a lot of work. The bitch we put Tex to stud with had one litter previous when she was about 4 and the labour started at about 7am and lasted (or so the owner thought) until about 9pm that night ... had 8 puppies in that time. The owner got some food, fell asleep and by the time she woke up two more pups have been born but the bitch hadn't cleaned them and they died. Nightmare or what. Ideally i would prefer not to breed from an older bitch and 'Molly' was pushing 7 when she came to get a servicing, i went round for the birth to help out and was there from 7pm till 5pm the next afternoon. Exhausted. 12 puppies though, all safe and sound! Quote Link to post

sowhat 1,572
IMO, I don't think the age of a bitch has anything to do with how good a mother they are. Some bitches are just naturals, and some just don't adapt to motherhood, don't really know why. My bitch who had 2 pups 8 weeks ago, is 4 years old, and she loves the pups to bits. She plays with them, and still would let them suckle her if we allowed it.She is a natural, although I don't know what she would have been like if she'd had a bigger litter 1 Quote Link to post
