A 18-55mm one breeze, if I can get along with the camera I'll be investing a new lens or two, any recommendations what will be best options. I'll be taking(trying ) action shots with the dogs and hoping to get a few bird shots, wildlife etc......

Extremetaz 15
A 18-55mm one The 300's a decent enough mid-entry level back, no question there - but that's a kit lense - as soon as you have the oppertunity, shift it on and get yourself some proper glass. If it's action shots you're going for, unfortunately glass that's gonna serve you well is pretty expensive. You need to be able to gather lots of light for action shots in order to keep the shutter speed down - this means lots of glass - and that means lots of money. There's plenty of mid-low range stuff that'll get you buy if you're not sure you're gonna stick with it, or if you just plain don't have the readies for the good stuff. The likes of Canon's 70-300 or some of the parrallel Sigma or Tamron stuff will help you get your eye in but they all suffer from a lack of ability to capture enough light (they're all f5.6 or worse at the long end), and there's a sacrifice in general glass quality as well. In short, they're easy on the pocket (~£400 second hand) but you'll outgrow them in jigtime and the results will leave you dissillusioned in all but the brightest, or closest, situations. For the dogs you'll get away with a 200mm, but for birds, unless you're planning on setting getting yourself up in a hide and snapping from 10-15 meters away, you're looking at either longer lenses (likely primes) or throwing an extender onto the likes of the aformentioned 200mm. If you do fancy getting yourself some good kit that will last you a lifetime (provided you stick with canon) then the best bang per buck combination, without doubt, is the 70-200mm f2.8 IS lense (and the "IS" part there is VERY important - do NOT buy the non IS version) and the 2x extender. There are 2 generations of both and a healthy second hand stock if you look around - but you're still looking at about £1000 for a secondhand bargain. The justification for this however, lies in the following. The 300D has a 1.6x focal multiplier - this means that the 70-200mm performs as ~110-320mm and at f2.8, couple this with the extender and you're out to 220-640mm with an equivalent apperature of f3.6. That's a better range, light gathering ability, and glass quality than you're ever gonna get from any other combo in anything even approaching the price bracket. ps: welcome to the moneypit that is photography.

Coyotehunter 689
There's some very good advice with the exception of your advice about not to buy the 70-200 2.8 non is , I have had this lens for 4years now and would never be without it , I have taken some of my best work with this lens and have made money from them, there many photographers rate the non is version above the is version
