ArchieHood 3,692
Due to global warming or even the male menopause I've decided to get another gun.I've decided to sell the S200 as im a one man band and know if I have 2 guns, like my carp rods only 1 will ever get used. Why Im changing I don't know, the S200 is a wonderful gun that will put pellet on pellet in the right hands as the boys found out in 2010 when Phantom brushed them aside to become Marksmen of the Year ,but I've made up my mind so I've surfed the forums looking for tips on a suitable replacement. I drew up a list of 4 guns and researched their pros and cons.First up was the HW100,the talisman of the shooting world, the only problem being (a) When I go for a mooch I can quite happily walk for several miles so carrying an anvil around doesn't really appeal to me, and ( I was always taught by my mum to Never speak to strangers Always be in before dark Never visit the Darkside So for once in my life I will listen to her. Next came BSA who offered up 2 guns, the R10 and the Super10, both in my book are real lookers, the R10 looks how I think an air rifle should look, but will it do the job? I get the feeling that unless it gets sent to Tench,Perch or Carp to get it regged for half the cost of the gun in the first place it falls short.Maybe if I become a budding film maker then I could afford it. Likewise the Super10,my preference would be the Bull Barrel, now known in the AirGun world by the Moleism "Mini Me",but yet again unless it is Blueprinted Fettled or Felched by JB or OJ it doesn't do what it says on the tin.Would I buy a new car and then spend half as much again to get it to drive in a straight line or give it a little more Va Va Voom, personally, the answer is no but that's Horses for Courses. That left me with 1 final option, trusty old Air Arms with the obvious choice being the S410,I am going to stick with .22,I have sausage fingers and the thought of trying to load a magazine with a smaller pellet put me off.The only thing to decide on was the model, but that was made easy by its title which the Oxford Dictionary reads as: : something judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind: a reference to the Air Arms Classic? Let the hunt begin..............To be continued. Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
And when did you ever do anything your parents told you to do, join the darkside, you know its the right thing to do, if only to piss your parents off Quote Link to post
Sweeney-Todd 208
Hi Archie. The R10 is a brilliant rifle mate. Had its problems in the beggining, but mostly sorted now. The R10 is already regd, so no need to send off to Tench, Carp, Cod fillet It would however benefit from a JB Blueprint, after which, you would have a lovely rifle. Good luck with your quest. Bill. 19powell90 89
I have owned an s410 and now own a hw100kt, IMHO the only thing that is different about the hw100 is that its reg'd and i dont have to mess about with power curves (which wasnt bad as all you have to do is fill to 170 and shoot down to 100 and your sorted) I know that the hw100 is classed as better built, smoother cocking, best mag system - which is all true but the s410 does it all faultlessly also. Go for it pal and when you have some spare dosh get it reg'd if you fancy more shots and no power curve. scott Quote Link to post
silentshot1 206
Wow..,. hard choice you have there! I have/ have had all of your choices, still have an S410 (tdr, but quality is the same) S10 and R10 and had an HW100 for 6 months last year. In honesty, all as good as each other in my experience out to 45m (ish), splitting hairs to point out faults (weight, shot count, noise etc, all been said before). As said, if like me you are out hunting in the main, all day when you can be, moving from area to area on foot, then I would first look at the S410 or R10. The S410 is quiet as a mouse and light enough to sling over your shoulder all day. The R10 is the same but with the bottle at 200 bar, will not suffer a power drop for circa 100 shots (above 200, my standard R10 can be a bit erratic). The S10, although shorter, is louder as needs more puff to get the pellet to speed through the stumpy barrel, which I notice around the downs and the HW100 does get on your nerves after a day out, as an extra 11lb's to carry back! My solution would be to buy a used, after sale tuned R10. I doubt I will part with mine, or the S410. If you are ever near Salisbury and fancy a pop with any of them in the field before making your choice, let me know. 1 Quote Link to post

Acuspell 329
If you are looking used, then you have missed a trick. You haven't included the iconic, been doing it for 25 years and built to withstand 50ft-lbs - the Theobon Rapid7. A brilliant rifle and they are affordable. So easily worked on and built like a tractor. Simply, reliable and accurate enough for my friend to use 177 pellets as targets at 50 yards! He is shooting tennis balls at 150 yards (20 cal running at 26ft-lbs, but the same rifle, just tuned). The handling isn't as nice as the modern rifles, I'll grant you but that can be sorted with a stock. Using a 400cc bottle you would get 250 shots out of a .22 at 12ft-lbs. If you use a 280 bottle you'll have much better handling and 150 shots, which for a rifle that was designed in 1985 shows just how far ahead of its time it really was - you only get the same shot count now for heavens sake, and using a regulator - put a reg on the R7 and see what happens! You can strip it and rebuild it in the field with a Leatherman too, without needing to be a master gunsmith to understand how it all works. There is a reason they are still sought after and fetching good money. Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
Mini Me does the job! Regged, pellet on pellet accurate, kills readily, the mark 3 stock makes it look like it is evolving into an R10! Does what it says on the tin and has a stonking great air bottle on it for plenty of shots per fill as well. The HW 100 is not as heavy as you think, particularly the Carbine variant... BSA Super 10 3.1kg 6.8lb HW100 Carbine 3.3kg 7.25lb Air Arms S410 3.1kg 6.8lb Plenty of shots out of that HW as well! Go BSA or Darkside, go on, I dare you! Quote Link to post
